Recreational Mathematics: St. Petersburg Team Would Overtake SOCAR According to the "Olympics" Tie-Break

The winner of the European Club Cup was determined by calculating the Sonneborn-Berger tie-break differently than at the Olympiad. Namely, this is how the tie-break was calculated at the Olympiad - the board points against a team multiplied with match point in the tournament of this team. This was noted by one of our readers Massimo Megale, who calculated that in this case St. Petersburg would win.

SOCAR
Ashdod: 2,5 (points gained by SOCAR in the match against Ashdod) x 10 (points gained by Ashdod) = 25
Gambit Aseko: 5,5 x 5 = 27,5
Oslo Schakselskap: 6 x 4 = 24
Schachgesellschaft Zurich: 6 х 6 = 36
Team Novy Bor: 3,5 x 8 = 28
Saint-Petersburg Chess Federation: 3,5 x 12 = 42
Tomsk-400: 5 x 10 = 50
TOT (- team lower match points) 208,5 (with Oslo 233)

Saint-Petersburg Chess Federation:
Gros Xake Taldea: 5 x 8 = 40
Vesnianka Gran: 5 x 8 = 40
Tammer-Shakki: 5,5 x 6 = 33
Economist-SGSEU: 3,5 x 10 = 35
Tomsk-400: 4 x 10 = 40
SOCAR: 2,5 x 12 = 30
Ashdod: 4 x 10 = 40

TOT (- team lower match points) 225 (with Tammer-Shakki 258 )

The second multiplier at the European Club Cup was different: the sum of the individual points, not the team points. For instance, in the case of SOCAR and Ashdod 2.5 was multiplied on 23, not 10. Thus, SOCAR's tie-break was 673.8, while St. Petersburg had - 665.5 (the official data).

It's noteworthy that the ECU Regulations state that in the case if the teams have gathered the equal number of points, the first tie-break for determining the winner should be the sum of the individual points. The European Club Cup followed the ECU's Regulations.

We asked the ECU President, Silvio Danailov to comment on the situation: "Unfortunately, the Regulations published on the official website are out of date; they have been changed at the General assembly of ECU in Istanbul. We are planning to update a completely updated version of the website, where you will find the updated documents."
