When the Rook Lay In Wait

Grand Prix: Gelfand wins again, Mamedyarov follows

Gelfand was first to make Adams feel bitterness of loss in the Grand Prix Series. This was third win for the World Vice-Champion and it strengthened his leading position in London.

Adams decided to check his rival in the "Rossolimo variation" of the Sicilian defence, however, he played differently than Anand in Moscow, who "allowed" black knight moving from g8 to e7. In general, Gelfand wouldn't experience any problems if not the rook stuck on h8. GM told about that in his commentary to the official website:

"I had to be careful with this rook: if the position would open, I would be in trouble. When the rook got into the game, I think I already had a slight advantage. Somewhere near 33rd move the game was close to a draw, but Micky blundered..."

ADAMS - GELFAND

33.Qe3? (better was 33.h3) Bd5 34.Ng5? Qf6 35.Nf3 Bxf3 36.Qxf3 Qxf3 37.gxf3 Rxf3. "The rook endgame is won in any case", - Gelfand added. It's noteworthy that this is Boris's second win in Sicilian with black at the Grand Prix London.

Only one participant maintains the status of Gelfand's nearest rival: that is Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Today the Azerbaijani used Nakamura's unconfident play after the opening (the King's Indian defence). Apparently, weak was the combination of 14...Qc8 and 15...Rb8, after which White grabbed initiative and strengthened it later.

Unfortunately, the winner quickly left the playing hall, so we couldn't get his commentary.
