More Dangerous Than It Seems

Peter Leko on his winning game against Vassily Ivanchuk

Round 2 of the Grand Prix London has finished. There were registed only two decisive games, in one of them Peter Leko beat Vassily Ivanchuk.

After the game Peter confessed he didn't expect the opening which took place, that's why at some point he even spent 30 minutes on thinking.

"After 9...Bхc5 I decided to go on 10.Ne2, which in practice can be more dangerous than it seems, - Leko says. - The game turned out to be interesting. I was lucky to exchange white-squared bishops. And still it may seem that white doesn't have anything, however, I still control a-vertical and the king gets to e3. It was also important that I exchanged the pair of rooks. I don't know how big my advantage was, but playing this position with black was surely very uncomfortable.

Closer to the time control we repeated the moves once, because I had less time. Ivanchuk understood that and maybe that's why he made an impulsive move:

32...Кf7? Losses immediately because of 33.g5.
Of course he had to agree to threefold - 32...Nd8. I don't if white can win here, but black for sure needs a lot of effort in order to defend this position."

"Did you see Ivanchuk's face after 32...Kf7 or after 33.g5 ?" - Leko was asked.
"No I didn't. Even if he understood his move was a mistake, he tried not to show it; while I saw the idea of playing g4-g5 half an hour before it could be realized, because this motive existed throughout the game. It was probably an unpleasant surprise for Ivanchuk: it's good to have
a guaranteed win when you are in a time trouble."

Vassily Ivanchuk didn't come to the press conference.
