Dear Mr. President!

There was an opening day of the World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul few days ago. It is a great event not only for the participants, organizer and guests but also for millions chess amateur all over the world. Every Olympiad first and foremost is an occasion which unites people in spite of their religion and political views.

To create such event one should do a lot of the spadework. Of course we all know that it was done by the Turkish Chess Federation and you personally as well.

And as all previous Turkish chess tournaments were well organized with staggering prizes there are no doubts that the Olympiad will be held on a top level.

Unfortunately one of the events that took place during the first days of the Olympiad is darken organizer’s and yours reputation, even despite the fact it doesn’t affect players.

I’m talking about Evgeny Surov (chief editor of the Chess-News) who was not allowed to visit the Olympiad. Such treatment of Mr. Surov and his site is groundless.

It’s a great pity that such forced conflict may turn into a juicy scandal and harm reputation of Turkish Chess Federation and you personally.

Dear Mr. President! You are almost the only one who may settle out this groundless issue and let the journalist do his work. At that time we all will treat this event only as misunderstanding on the eve of the Olympiad.

Yours sincerely,
Vasily Papin, International Grand Master, Editor-in-chief on site “Chess in Rostov region”

  • Dear Mr. Yazici,

The Russian Chess Federation is sincerely grateful to you for the organization of the world chess festival – Olympiad in Istanbul.

Taking into account the long-term friendly relationship between our countries and federations, we earnestly ask you to provide the Russian journalist Evgeny Surov with an opportunity to freely cover the World Chess Olympiad.

  • Dear Arkady Vladimirovich and Dear Ilya Vladislavovich!

I would like to tell you about my outrageous experience as a Russian journalist at this time of the Olympiad in Istanbul. As one of the FIDE’s leaders, Mr. Ali Nihat Yazici, with sufferance of Mr. Makropoulos and Mr. Ilyumzhinov, are violating not only their slogan «We are one family» but also my rights as a journalist and human.

  • The President of the Turkish Chess Federation Ali Nihat Yazici has resigned from his Vice-President's post at the World Chess Federation (FIDE). Recently he's been under a mass of criticism from various sides due to the scandalous banning of arbiters from seven federations from working at the forthcoming Olympiad in Istanbul.

  • About a week ago Chess-News site chief editor Evgeny Surov received an unpolite letter from Olympiad organizers who told him that he will not be invited to the Olympiad neither as a journalist nor as a guest. He tried to change the situation by applying to chess officials of different levels but in vain. However last night after the opening ceremony FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told Evgeny Surov in a private talk that the will try to settle the things over during the day of the first round.

  • I would say that current events in Istanbul should be printed on the first page. I’m talking about a well-known journalist Eugene Surov. He was forbidden to act as a journalist on Chess Olympiad. The only explanation was “we’re not allowed to let Mr. Surov in”.

All that has happened causes only bewilderment. Can we believe that such organization as FIDE still lives according to the law of the jungle (as in 90s)?

  • "I don’t think that boycotting the Olympiad is the right method for solving the problems", said the Head of the Management Board of the Russian Chess Federation Ilya Levitov in an interview to our site, "It’s necessary to achieve the right solution in a constructive way, rather than by boycotting the Olympiad. To write a letter and meet with Yazici; I don’t know - talk to him, understand his motivation and position, and try to change his position".

  • Kirsan Ilyumzhinov once again asked the chief of the Olympiad organizing committee Ali Nihat Yazici to settle the issue related to the Chess-News chief editor acreditation and let him in the playing hall. Ali Nihat Yazici promised to discuss this during the organizing committee meeting and report the FIDE President about the results.

  • Today Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was on an official visit in Baku. The FIDE President's visit to Azerbaijan is connected to the signing of contracts for the Olympiad 2016 and World Cup 2015 scheduled to be held in the capital of the country. The officials held the joint conference, where Mahir Mammadov, the Vice-President of the Azerbaijani Chess Federation, announced the budget for organising these two events. "The budget will be 15 million EUR.

  • The Association of Chess Professionals is calling for Ali Nihat Yazici to take a step back

  • The FIDE Women's World Team Championship is scheduled to be held from March 2-13 in Astana, Kazakhstan. At the moment the tournament has not got an official website; the participants haven't been officially announced, however, as Chess-News has found out the FIDE President nominee team has been determined, that is Turkish national women's team.
