Viorel Bologan's win gained against Wang Hao in Round 9 of the super GM tournament held in Biel wasn't an easy one. As it turned out a draw in the encounter against Giri was enough for Carlsen to become a sole leader one round to go. Wang Hao, was forced to use most of his time for the first 30 moves of the game in order to hold the position, eventually Chinese experienced the time trouble.

Viorel BOLOGAN - WANG HAO

This is the position after white's 40th move. Black needed to make one move till the time control, but the problem was that it wasn't that easy to find that specific move. Just any move - in order not to lose on time. The rook on b2 is fixed because exchanging queens is equal to a loss; the rook on b8 is also locked by the pawns. The queen is forced to look at the rook, while the king is defending g6-pawn. So, only knights are left. The move with one of them 40...Ne8 was giving black real chances for holding, however, Wang Hao chose the "wrong" knight. After 40...Ne5 41. Rxb2 Rxb2 42. Bd4 the further resistance was merely a formality: Qg3 43. Bxb2 Nf3+ 44. Rxf3 exf3 45. Qd2 Nxd5 46. Nxf5 f2+ 47. Kf1 Qh2 48. Kxf2 Bxb2 49. Qh6+ 1-0

Noteworthy is also the variant which didn't take place in the game, but explains why white didn't play 40. Bd4 a move earlier.

It would be followed by 40...Ng4! with the further 41. Bxb2 Rxb2, and white king just can't stand all the attacks.

Anyway, after all the top of the table is again "as usually" occupied by Carlsen.
