After Ilya Levitov's and Andrew Paulson's commentary on the situation with the changed venue of the FIDE Grand Prix Series, we got an exclusive commentary on the issue from  Ilya Merezin, the member of AGON's Board of Directors:

"The RCF, despite all our repeated requests, didn't give us a formal permission for holding the Grand Prix in Chelyabinsk. Moreover, we got to know that Ilya Levitov, the Chairman of the Management Board of the Russian Chess Federation, personally called the Governor of the Chelyabinsk region, Mikhail Yurievich, with the demand not to authorize holding Grand Prix in Chelyabinsk. That made further work in Chelyabinsk practically impossible, even in the case if the permission would be given."

"What upsets me most, - Merenzon adds, - is the fact that this situation touches my hometown - the place where chess and hockey are traditional and beloved sports for the locals. It's a pity that Chelyabinsk lost a chance to hold such a great tournament."

Let us remind you that the information on the changed venue of the FIDE Grand Prix Series was confirmed yesterday. Instead of Chelyabinsk the competition is planned to be held in London.
