The Tal Memorial: the World ex-Champion Caught Tripped Morozevich

The sixth day of play at the Mikhail Tal super tournament culminated in two lengthy battles.

Fabiano Caruana overcame Luke McShane in the game where the Italian gained a significant advantage out of the opening, but allowed his opponent to develop strong counterplay. If the Englishman didn't make a mistake on the move 37, who knows how it would have ended. As it happened, McShane soon ended up in an endgame with only practical drawing chances, but he wasn't able to save it.

Vladimir Kramnik was realising an advantage against Evgeny Tomashevsky; it became clear, after a rather dramatic loss by Alexander Morozevich to Hikaru Nakamura, that Kramnik's win would give him a share of the first place, three rounds before the end.
The Chebanenko System of the Slav Defence was played in the encounter of the Russian compatriots, but the game quickly transposed to a variation of the Queen's Gambit. Kramnik used a rare move after an exchange of the queens, but the opponent was playing confidently to start with...

Here are some critical moments in the game.

KRAMNIK - TOMASHEVSKY

Black successfully held back the onslaught for a long time. 26...a5! was the way to the definitive equality.

Kramnik chose 42.h5+?! in an already winning position and fell into the deeply covered trap.

Soon it became clear that 46.Nd6 (seemingly with the full domination) is followed by 46...Kg4!! 47.Kxd2 Kf3, and it's not clear how White can win here. Kramnik preferred to play with an extra pawn instead: 46.Rxf6.

Black's effort of saving the game could have been rewarded by an elegant continuation:  59...Nf6! 60.Rg5+ Kh6 61.Ke5 Nxe4!! 62.Kxe4 Ra4+.

Nevertheless, Tomashevsky reached a clearly drawn position anyway. When he practically had to make only one precise move (68...Na4), 68...Ke5?? was played without almost any thought. After 69.Rd7! it became clear that the game ends in favour of the World ex-Champion.

"He smelt the blood", is written in Kramnik's eyes after Tomashevsky's mistake

Kramnik is sharing the first place with Alexander Morozevich three rounds before the finish. Teimour Radjabov, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana are half a point behind. The second and last free day is on Friday.
