The U.S. Championship: In the Penultimate Round Nakamura Beat Kamsly and Grabbed the Sole Lead

The penultimate 10th round of the U.S. Championship was marked with two decisive games. The result of one of them turned out to be extremely important: Nakamura who was half a point behind of Gata Kamsky beat him and grabbed the sole lead.

In a tense key game Nakamura got a perspective position after the opening and had all chances to grab initiative, however, he made a bad bargain by winning an extra pawn on move 22 and the position became unclear.

KAMSKY - NAKAMURA

Instead of 22...Bxb3?! strong was 22...Nc4!.

Perhaps Kamsky's main mistake was made before the 40th move time control.

The position is approximately equal. But after Kamsky's inaccuracies (maybe, this was one decision of defending e4-pawn and moving the rook to line c), 36.f3?! Bf8 37.Rc1?! Bxb4 Hikaru got advantage which he successfully converted.

In another decisive game Alejandro Ramirez defeated Alexander Stripunsky playing Black.

Standings after the final round:
1. Nakamura - 7.5 out of 10
2. Kamsky - 7
3. Onischuk - 6
4. Shulman - 5.5
... (12 participants)

In the final round Nakamura will be White against Yasser Seirawan, while Kamsky will face Robert Hess. Alexander Onischuk and Yury Shulman will determin the bronze winner. Onischuk has White.

In women's section the decisive 9th round will be held simultaneously with the decisive 11th round of men's section. As we've already reported Anna Zatonskih and Iryna Krush share the lead; one of them will surely get the title for the 7th time in a row.
