The U.S. Championship: Kamsky Brilliantly Beat Seirawan and Is Now in the Lead. Annotations

Время публикации: 18.05.2012 14:45 | Последнее обновление: 30.08.2012 13:43

The proportion of decisive games in the U.S. Championship in Saint Louis, which has entered its crucial stage, continues to be high. Four out of six games brought wins to White in the ninth round.

Gata Kamsky's win over Yasser Seirawan is particularly notable from the sporting and creative aspects.

KAMSKY - SEIRAWAN
The U.S. Championship 2012 (Round 9)

The Caro-Kann Defence
(Annotations by Mikhail Golubev).
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.Nf3 Nd7 8.h5 Bh7 9.Bd3 Bxd3 10.Qxd3 e6 11.Bd2 Ngf6 12.0–0–0 Be7
The plan with long castling has been studied even more thoroughly - 12…Qc7 13.Ne4 0-0-0 14.g3.
13.Ne4 Nxe4 14.Qxe4 Nf6 15.Qd3 0–0

16.Kb1
It has been proved many times that the following isn't dangerous for Black: 16.Ne5?! c5!. And after 16.g4 Nxg4 17.Rhg1, Black, for the first time, braved taking another pawn in the relatively recent gam
Hovhannisyan - Akopian at the European Championship: 17...Nxf2N, which led to a draw after 18.Qe2 Nxd1 19.Bxh6 Bf6 20.Bxg7 Bxg7 21.h6 Qf6 22.Qh2 Qxf3 23.hxg7 Qe3+ 24.Kb1 Nc3+ 25.bxc3 Qxg1+ 26.Qxg1 Rfd8 27.Qg5 Kh7 28.Qf6 Rd7 29.Kb2 Rg8 30.Qh4+ Kxg7 31.Qg3+ Kf8 32.Qb8+ Kg7 33.Qg3+ Kf8 34.Qb8+ Kg7 35.Qg3+ 1/2.
16...c5
Black has tried 16...Qd5 several times; Kamsky played this himself against Smets in Wijk aan Zee 2009.
17.g4 Nxg4 18.Qe2!
After the more common 18.Rhg1 Black, possibly, can again take the second pawn: 18...Nxf2, which happened in several games
. But that's a separate analysis altogether. After 19.Qe2 Nxd1 20.Bxh6 Kh7! 21.Bxg7 Rg8 there doesn't appear to be any direct win for White.

18...Kh8
It's a difficult question, what is best to play here?
After 18...Qd5?!, there are some dangers for Black: 19.Ne5!? Ginsburg - Fridman, Zurich 2003, but 19.Rhg1! is probably even stronger.
In the game Paikidze - Girya, Chennai 2011 there was 18...Qb6 19.Rhg1 f5 20.Ne5 cxd4 21.Nd7 (less ambitious is 21.Nxg4!?) 21...Qa6. The key here is the tense endgame with an exchange advantage for White and a compensation for Black, which happens after 22.Qxa6 bxa6 23.Nxf8.
The first game on this topic 18.Qe2, Fercec - J.Petrov, Pula 1999, was almost the most important one: 18...cxd4!? 19.Rhg1 d3 20.cxd3 f5 21.Qxe6+ Kh8 22.Bc3 (22.d4! keeps hopes of at least some kind of a "plus") 22...Bf6 23.Nh4 Bxh4 24.Rxg4 Bf6 25.Rxg7 (25.Rg6!? is unlikely to be a radical improvement) 25...Kxg7 26.Rg1+ Kh8 27.Rg8+ Kh7! 28.Qxf5+, draw.
19.Rhg1 Nf6
Undoubtedly, 19...f5 doesn't bring equality.
20.dxc5! Qc7

21.Ne5!N
The following is not scary for Black: 21.Rg2 Qxc5 22.Rdg1 Rg8 Dzil - Heilman, ICCF 2003.
21...Bxc5?
Seirawan allows a beautiful combination. Also not successful is 21...Qxc5?! 22.Bc3!. Possibly, the critical continuation here is 21...Rad8, after which the computer recommends 22.b4 (and on 22...a5 - 23.a3) and assesses the position slightly in White's favour, which isn't that obvious.
22.Bxh6! gxh6

23.Rd7!! Qxd7
The key to White's intentions is in the variation 23...Nxd7 24.Qd2!! Kh7 25.Ng4!!. But after the move in the game, the win is more prosaic.
24.Nxd7 Nxd7 25.Qd2

25...Kh7 26.b4!? Rad8 27.bxc5 Nf6 28.Qf4 Ne8 29.Qe4+ Kh8 30.Qxb7 Ng7 31.Qxa7 Rc8 32.Rd1 Nf5 33.Rd7 Kg7 34.a4 Kf6 35.a5 1–0

Hikaru Nakamura, who was sharing the first place with Kamsky, wasn't able to overcome Aleksandr Lenderman's resistance in a lengthy encounter. Now Gata is half a point ahead of the rival; they are playing against each other in the pivotal game of the tenth and penultimate round. Kamsky will be White.

The penultimate round of the Women's Championship has already happened. Irina Krush won against Alena Kats and, in an even more important encounter, Anna Zatonskih beat Rusudan Goletiani, who was half a point behind.
Zatonskih and Krush are leading with 6 out of 8 points before the ninth and final round, which will be played by women after the free day, at the same time as the men's eleventh round; it's clear that the title will definitely belong to one of the two players. In the final round Krush will play against Camilla Baginskaite and Zatonskih against Tatev Abrahamyan.

The last six Championships were won by either Zatonskih (2006, 2008, 2009, 2011) or Krush (2007, 2010), who also won the title at the age of fourteen in 1998.
