Ivanchuk became the sole leader in Havana after defeating Laznicka

The first stage of the round-robin Jose Raul Capablanca Memorial, currently under way in the Cuban capital, has ended. Today is a rest day. Vassily Ivanchuk, who had won the tournament several times, is currently ahead. The active legend confidently outplayed his opponent Victor Laznicka in yesterday's game. This win allowed the Lviv resident to become the sole leader again.

LAZNICKA - IVANCHUK
The Capablanca Memorial, Havana 2012 (Round 5)
The Nimzo-Indian Defence
(Annotations by Mikhail Golubev).
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 c5 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.Bd3 Bxc3+ 7.bxc3 d6

The future top grandmasters Bent Larsen and Lajos Portisch stood at the start of the development of this system sixty years agoFischer (in the World Championship match of 1972), Karpov, Ivanchuk and Anand also made their contribution here later.
8.0-0 e5 9.Nd2 0-0
White has several important options here.
10.Rb1 b6 11.d5
11.h3 is played a lot more often.
11...Ne7 12.Qc2 g6 13.f4!?

13...exf4
After 13...Ng4?! 14.Nf3 exf4 15.exf4 Nf5 16.Re1 h5 17.h3 Ngh6, Black certainly got a suspicious position in the game Korotylev - Womacka, Pardubice 2001, although he managed to win later on.
14.h3?!N
This move is a bit too clever. The following also turned out to be unsuccessful: 14.exf4 Bf5 15.h3 h5 16.Nf3 Qd7, and Black is better, Chuprikov - Shaposhnikov, Voronezh 2008.
Although this leaves the square e5 without control, White can develop the most of activity after 14.Rxf4 Nf5, with mutual chances.
14...Nf5!
Black doesn't need to play 14...fxe3?! 15.Rxf6 with big complications, where White's black-squared bishop becomes very active. Ivanchuk's position is preferable after his move in the game.
15.Bxf5 Bxf5 16.e4 Bd7 17.Rxf4

17...Qe7!?
Black could have started with 17...Nh5 and …f5 straight away, but preferred to improve his position a little before doing that. It's harder for White to find a clearly improving move, whose army is restricted by the defence of the e4 pawn.
18.Bb2?!
It's was probably worth trying 18.Nf3!, aiming to keep a dynamic position.
18…Nh5!
White prepared the development of the rook at a cost of temporarily keeping the bishop in a very passive position. That's why there's no point for Black to delay active actions any longer.
19.Rf2 f5 20.Re1 Rae8 21.Bc1
Black has a serious advantage and real chances of winning. All the minuses of White's position haven't changed since the opening, while none of the plusses remained.
21...f4!? 22.Qd1 Qg7 23.Nf1

23...Re5
As it's typical for this opening, there is no reason to allow activation of White's black-squared bishop, even by taking two pawns in the variation 23...Qxc3 24.Bb2 Qxc4 25.Nd2.
24.Nh2 Qe7 25.Qd3

25...Rg5?!
It can't be said that this kind of psychological attack loses the advantage. Moreover, Laznicka made a mistake straight away. However, the direct 25...Bf5! was stronger. In the endgame, after 26.Bxf4 Bxe4 27.Qd2 Nxf4 28.Rxf4 Rxf4 29.Qxf4 Bxd5 30.Rxe5 dxe5 31.Qg4, White's practical chances of survival are not good.
26.g4?
White could have chosen 26.Nf3!? Rg3, where his hopes lie in complications based on the advance e4-e5; although Black's trumps are, objectively, higher due to his play against the king.
The other option was 26.Rf3. After that, it's possible that the only right decision is the psychologically difficult retreat 26...Re5! (restarting the pressure on the e4 pawn whilst White hasn't started his counterplay against the f4 pawn via Ref1). It turns out that White has nothing fundamentally better than 27.Rff1, but after that Black may go for the variation listed against the move 25.
26...fxg3 27.Rxf8+ Qxf8 28.Nf3

28...Re5!
It's stronger than the only alternative 28…Nf4 29.Bxf4 Qxf4 30.Qe3! and White goes into the endgame with some drawing chances. After Ivanchuk's move, the rook can't be taken because of the checkmate in two.
29.Kg2 Re7
Black has an extra pawn and a big advantage. Laznicka almost didn't have any hope of survival even with a better play. He impulsively gave up one more pawn and resigned two moves later.
30.e5? dxe5 31.d6 Re6 32.Qd5 Nf6 0-1
