Strolling Along with the French Defence

The elevated mood swept Switzerland. The locals got the long-awaited heat and the sun. Zurich got undressed.

Note that all that happens in the midst of a workday... So when those Swiss manage to work? Who works their guts out for the benefit of the country from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m.? How do they manage to live as they live?

Meanwhile, Savoy Baur en Ville, one of the oldest hotels in Zurich, built in 1838, which is now also the venue of Kramnik - Aronian match, has been visited by one of the famous Swiss: Viktor Korchnoi.

The veteran didn't come to the meeting with the sponsor of the match Oleg Skvortsov empty-handed, he has brought souvenirs from the distant 1978.

The businessman also had "something with him."

The participants of the friendly match discussed some of the twists and turns of not very friendly match played in 1978. Skvortsov was nine and couldn't remember any of the newspapers publishing Korchnoi's picture. According to the Soviet media Karpov was fighting for the World Championship title against a virtual challenger.

Petra Leeuwerik, Korchnoi's faithful life-companion, confirms: that's the way it was.

The old wolf is faithful to his pet opening. Only French defence!

The early stage of the match has been played by Korchnoi more confidently than by his rival, however, an unexpected queen lunge forced the veteran to spend 10 minutes from the given 20. At that moment Korchnoi's facial expression showed if not the smell of the trouble, than the evidence that the game is not developing in the way the famous player would like it to.

Meanwhile, Petra has her own problems to solve. A 6 letter word going down and beginning in Z...

The veteran outplayed his opponent in a mutual time trouble. "And the mood has improved."

After winning the second game in which Volga-Benko gambit took place, Korchnoi noted that e2-e3 variation he has used, has been developed by him in 1971. And after
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5, it's obvious to play 4.Nf3 first, and only in the case of Black playing 4...g6 (according to Korchnoi that's an inaccuracy), continue 5.cb a6 6.е3, and White holds the extra pawn.

"And in general you had to play e7-e6, without d7-d6. And since you haven't played so, that means you don't like this type of position."

It's impossible to fight on equal terms with the person who knows the things that are unknown for others...

The elite of the past has been replaced by the current elite in less than an hour.

The GMs tried to make the most of the equal endgame but didn't succeed. According to the official version the position wasn't that simple; unofficial version says they just didn't want to play rapid; but who knows how it actually was...
