At the Opening of the World Chess Art Week Ilyumzhinov Said Dnepropetrovsk Should Become a Center for the Development of Intellect and Chess Thought

One of the largest cities of Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk hold events in the Student's Palace of the Dnepropetrovsk National University, local history museum and local chess club in support of the World Chess Art Week, which was opened in the framework of the 80th anniversary of the Dnepropetrovsk region. 

The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov together with the Governor of Dnepropetrovsk region Alexander Vilkul hold a briefing before the opening ceremony of the Chess Art Week.

The Governor, in particular, announced opening of the chess clubs in several districts of the region including the one in Kryvyi Rih. "I've been playing chess since I was 5 years old and maybe once I even was a good player", - said Vilkul.

The FIDE President expressed his support of such initiative of chess promotion and underlined his readiness to share the experience of promoting chess lessons in the schools program. "I think that Dnepropetrovsk is a pearl of Ukraine and it has to become the center for the development of intellect and chess thought," quoted him regional mass media. 

Ilyumzhinov and Vilkul opened the session of the simul played by the famous Israeli GM Alik Gershon making first symbolic moves.

The number of the boards (80) was chosen in connection with the 80th anniversary of the Dnepropetrovsk region which is celebrated this year. Gershon won 56 games, lost 7 and drew 17.

Ilyumzhinov visited the exhibition "Move after move" in the history museum, dedicated to the history of development of chess in the region, he also attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition "I would compare the world to the chess board..." held in the building of the Diorama "Battle for the Dnieper River."

The traditional Sinitsyn Memorial Junior competition has also started on Thursday. Other events planned in the framework of the Chess Art Week include blitz tournament for chess veterans as well as the event held under the aegis of Rudenko School of chess composition.
