Sensation! Sarkhan Gashimov, Vugar Gashimov's older brother, won Blitz tournament in San Sebastian leaving behind several players over 2700 ELO.

The Donostia blitz event was held on January 6th, after major tournaments of "Donostia Chess Festival" were finished. Among forty other  participants the following favourites competed for the prize: Arkadij Naiditsch, Maxim Vachier-Lagrave, Alexandr Moiseenko.

At the beginning the participants were divided into four groups. In his "B" group Sarkhan Gashimov took second place after Naiditsch, with 8 points out of 10, which means he left behind four GM rivals.

In the final with 16 players and knock-out system Sarkhan consecutively beat  Moiseenko, Strikovic, Loek van Wely and Julio Granda Zuniga in the final match.

The winner's rating is 2351. Sarkhan is not following professional chess, but supports his brother in the capacity of manager.

Here's the table of the "knock-out". In the semifinal Sarkhan defeated Loek van Wely (2-1) in Armageddon.
