Ernesto Inarkiev Crowned European Chess Champion

Another Russian celebrates his victory

VE Day for Ernesto Inarkiev’s fans. And it is a memorable day indeed: on 23 May, exactly 65 years after the birth of the legendary Anatoly Karpov, the Grandmaster from Kirgizia became European Champion, his greatest success to date.

When we asked the new Champion how he felt Ernesto answered laconically: “I did it!”

Inarkiev has extended the impressive list of Russians who have won the European gold metal over the last eight years. Only Ukraine’s Alexander Moiseenko in 2013 has interrupted this hegemony.

In the final round Ernesto comfortably drew with the Black pieces against Poland’s Kacper Piorun to ensure himself outright first place.

Radoslaw Wojtaszek, who was one point behind Ernesto going into the last round and with a superior tie-breaker score, saw his nerves fail in the eleventh game. Which was certainly not the case with his opponent, Baadur Jobava, who outplayed the Pole in the endgame and claimed third prize.

Igor Kovalenko came second. This was a particularly impressive feat: after his disappointing loss to Inarkiev he stayed focused and won his two final games. Whereas in his previous game against Laurent Fressinet he demonstrated the superiority of the bishop versus the knight, in his final game against Aleksey Goganov the Latvian GM emerged from a complicated struggle to reach an endgame the exchange up

GOGANOV - KOVALENKO

According to the 6-figure database objective play by White should ensure a draw. Generally speaking a top player like Goganov should not find it too difficult to draw here. But humans have a tendency to err – especially at the very end of a long tournament.

To have chances of winning Black needs to capture the f4 pawn. Black cannot sacrifice the exchange to win this pawn, however, as White draws the king + pawn vs king ending easily, using the opposition. Only Black’s king can hence capture White’s pawn. To prevent Black from doing this White has to control the e3 square with his king and e4 with his bishop. If the bishop attempts to carry out its function from the top of the h1-a8 diagonal then either Black forces the White king to f3, after which he will chase the bishop from the long diagonal, or else White immediately surrenders control over e3. In order to prevent this White should move his bishop to one of the two bottom squares on the long diagonal.

So the way to draw here would be 74.Bh1! or 74.Bg2!. For example, 74.Bh1 Rb3 75.Bg2 Rb2+ 76.Kf3 Ra2 77.Bh1 Rh2 78.Bg2 Kd3 79.Bf1+ Kd2 80.Ba6 Rh3+ 81.Kf2 Ra3 82.Bf1 (but not 82.Bc8?? Ra5 83.Bb7 Ra4!) 82...Ra4 83.Kf3 Ke1 84.Bh3 Ra3+ 85.Kg2.
Instead the game continued
74.Bc6?? Ra7?? Kovalenko gifts his opponent a final chance to draw. He would have won with 74...Ra2+! 75.Kf3 Ra6 76.Bb7 Ra7 77.Bc6 Kc5, and the rest as in the game itself.
75.Ke2?? And again he should have played 75.Bh1! or 75.Bg2!.
75...Ra2+! 76.Kf3 Ra6 77.Bb7 Ra7 78.Bc6 Kc5 79.Be8 Ra3+ 80.Kf2 Kd5 0-1 (Commentary by Alexei Yarovinsky)

"I didn’t feel that I was a chess player or a sportsman. Rather, it was like being a reality show star! At last my six-months plus decline is over and I’m ready to make up for lost time!" – Igor wrote on his page in the Vkontakte social network.

In case you forgot, the European Championship has been assigned as a qualifying event by FIDE for the World Cup. The following 23 players have won their invitations to Tbilisi next year:

Ernesto Inarkiev, Igor Kovalenko, Baadur Jobava, David Navara, Francisco Vallejo, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Kacper Piorun, Laurent Fressinet, Aleksey Goganov, Daniil Dubov, Nikita Vitiugov, Ivan Cheparinov, Evgeniy Najer, Robert Hovhannisyan, Sergei Zhigalko, Mladen Palac, Ivan Salgado, Aleksey Dreev, David Anton Guijarro, Kirill Stupak, Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu, Aryan Tari, and Anton Demchenko.

  • He has reason to smile

  • The top game in the European Championship in Gjakova has ended with Inarkiev winning as Black against David Navara.

  • We have already commented twice on Aleksey Goganov’s successes in Gjakova. Let’s now take a close look at his latest victory, following which Aleksey finds himself hot on the heels of the tournament leader.

  • Going into the fourth round of the European Championship in Gjakova two Georgian GMs were among the competitors yet to lose a game: that country’s undisputed number one Baadur Jobava and the experienced Zurab Sturua, who has been one of the top players on the veterans circuit in recent years. But last night their paths diverged. For how long, though?

    JOBAVA - PARLIGRAS

  • With two rounds to go in the European Championship at Kosovo Ernesto Inarkiev is firmly in pole position. However, the battle is not only about first place. The players are also competing for invitations to the World Cup (the first 23 participants get a ticket) as well as for cash (22 main prizes plus 10 additional prizes). Not to mention the creative aspect, which as usual is the focus of our commentator Alexei Yarovinsky, who reflects on several fragments from round 9 below.

  • Nine players have yet to lose a game after the third round of the European Championship in Gjakova. This set of competitors includes Baadur Jobava, who the previous day had stayed true to his original style and deliberately adopted a somewhat worse position against Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, provoking the Armenian GM to charge forward with reckless abandon, for which he was duly punished.

  • The second round of the European Championship in Gjakova saw a number of fierce battles. The only exceptions were a few games between compatriots that ended in harmless draws: between the Czech players Hracek and Navara, and between Belarusians Stupak and Zhigalko.

  • Anna is back with a vengeance

  • The self-declared Republic of Kosovo is host to the European Chess Championship that kicked off on Thursday. The competition sees a fair mix of strong grandmasters and many amateurs. In fact too many: we have the impression that such a large number of unrated or lowly-rated local players has never competed in such a tournament.

  • Nothing attractive about Gjakova except the chess games
