Kosovo: Generous Hosts Gave Points Away at the Start. Ponomariov Shows His Fighting Spirit

Время публикации: 13.05.2016 23:45 | Последнее обновление: 13.05.2016 23:46

The self-declared Republic of Kosovo is host to the European Chess Championship that kicked off on Thursday. The competition sees a fair mix of strong grandmasters and many amateurs. In fact too many: we have the impression that such a large number of unrated or lowly-rated local players has never competed in such a tournament. And that is why nearly all the tournament favourites started with a win.

But the first round did have some surprises in store: draws for Yuriy Kryvoruchko, Gabriel Sargissian and David Howell. Indeed, the Brit was only saved by his GM status: his Kosovar opponent accepted a draw despite having a large advantage both over the board and in time.

Ruslan Ponomariov began with a bang.

KORCHMAR - PONOMARIOV

12...Nh5! 13.Bg5 f6 14.Bd2 f5 15.Ng5? The knight plans to occupy the strong outpost on е6, but that is no compensation for the multitude of weaknesses in the White camp.
The prophylactic move 15.Qc1!? looks logical, preventing the Black pawn from advancing to f4.
It is also worth considering playing in the centre with 15.e4!? f4!? (15...fxe4 16.Re1 Ne5 17.Nxe5 Bxe5 18.Nxe4 Bf5 19.Bc3 Bxe4 20.Rxe4 Qf7 is also fine) 16.g4 Nhf6 17.Nb5 Ne8! 18.Bc3 Bxc3 19.bxc3 Ne5 20.Nxe5 Qxe5 21.Qf3 g5 22.Rfe1 Ba6 23.Bf1 Bxb5 24.Bxb5 Nf6. Black’s chances are at least equal in both cases, as White’s light-squared bishop is less mobile than Black’s knight.
15...f4! 16.Ne6 fxg3 17.f4 Although this move objectively worsens White’s already difficult position there is no point in condemning it here – White’s desire to turn the game around is laudable. After 17.Nxf8 Nxf8, White’s position is tough despite being the exchange ahead, as his king is weak and Black controls the dark squares.
17...Ndf6 Ruslan logically wants to bring his pieces to bear down on the enemy king as soon as possible, but it would have been objectively stronger to play 17...Rf7! 18.Ng5 Rf5, and if 19.e4, then 19...Rxg5! 20.fxg5 Ba6 with a decisive advantage thanks to his control of the dark squares and his stronger pieces.
18.Nxf8? In gaining the exchange White cedes the initiative. He should have fought for the initiative with 18.f5! gxf5 19.Rxf5 Bxe6 20.dxe6 Rae8 21.e3 Kh8 22.Rxh5 Nxh5 23.Qxh5 Qxe6 24.Rf1 and chances to prove that he is equal in this double-edged game.
18...Bxf8 19.e4

19...Ng4! The ex-FIDE world champion intensifies the attack.
20.hxg4? Vasily Korchmar picks up more material but his positional concessions this time prove fatal.
He could have put up resistance with 20.f5!, after which Black could have replied 20...Nh2 21.fxg6 Nxf1 (21...hxg6? is met with the tactic 22.Rf5!! with counterplay) 22.gxh7+ Qxh7 23.Qxf1 Bg7 24.Nb5 Bxb2 25.Re1 Ba6 – and Black’s chances are better. But instead 20...Nf2! 21.Qf3 Bg7 is stronger, controlling е5 with a lasting initiative.
20...Qh4 21.Rf3 Bxg4 22.Kf1 Bg7 23.Ke2 We can sympathize with his desire to evacuate his king from the danger zone. The other lines were losing anyway
.
23...Rf8 24.Kd3 Bxf3 25.Bxf3 Nxf4+ 26.Kc2 g2 27.Bxf4 Rxf4 28.Bxg2 Rf2+ 29.Kb3 Rxg2 30.Qf1 Qg3 0-1

* * *

Ivan Cheparinov failed to be put off by the impressive surname of his opponent from Turkey and he himself launched an attack.

CHEPARINOV - ATAKISI

35.e7 Bxe7 36.fxe7? The Bulgarian had failed to notice that he could avoid swapping his strong pawn: after 36.Rde1! Bf8 (36...Bxf6 37.Rxe5 Bxe5 38.Rf7 Bg7 39.Qxg5 h6 40.Qf5 d4 41.g3 d3 42.Rd7 is hopeless) the crushing yet quiet move 37.f7!! would have given White a decisive advantage – 37…Bxh6 (37...Qxe1?? 38.fxg8Q+ Kxg8 39.Qxg5+) 38.fxg8Q+ Kxg8 39.Rxe5 with a won endgame.
36...Qxe7 37.Qb6 Rgf8 38.Qd4+ Qg7 39.Rxf8+ Rxf8 40.Qxd5 Qxb2 41.Qxg5 Qd4 42.Qc1 Qxa4 43.h3

43...Qb5? After 43...Qb4 White has sufficient compensation for the pawn given the weakness of the enemy king, but he hardly had enough to claim an advantage. Now however the Black king’s position is dire.
44.Qc3+ Kg8 45.Rd3! Rf6 Playing 45...Rf1+ 46.Kh2 Qb6 47.Rg3+ Kf8 48.Qg7+ Ke8 49.Qe5+ Kf8 50.Re3 Qg6 51.Rc3 Rf6 52.Qb8+ Kg7 53.Rg3 was no better for Black.
46.Rd8+ Kg7 47.Qg3+ Rg6 (if 47...Kh6 then 48.Rd4! Qg5 49.Rh4+ Kg6 50.Rg4 wins the game) 48.Qc7+ Kh6 (the outcome would have been no different after 48...Kf6 49.Qf4+ Ke7 50.Qf8+ Ke6 51.Qd6+ Kf7 52.Rd7+) 49.Qf4+ Kh5 The crushing coordination of the White pieces is demonstrated after 49...Qg5 50.Qf8+ Kh5 (or 50...Rg7 51.Rd6+ Kh5 52.Qf3+ Kh4 53.Rd4+) 51.g4+ Kh4 52.Qf2+ Kxh3 53.Rd3+ Kxg4 54.Qf3+ Kh4 55.Qh3#.
50.g4+ Kh4 51.g5+ Kxh3 52.Qf3+ Kh4 53.Rd4+ Kxg5 54.Qf4+ 1-0 (Commentary by Alexey Yarovinsky

  • The top game in the European Championship in Gjakova has ended with Inarkiev winning as Black against David Navara.

  • We have already commented twice on Aleksey Goganov’s successes in Gjakova. Let’s now take a close look at his latest victory, following which Aleksey finds himself hot on the heels of the tournament leader.

  • With two rounds to go in the European Championship at Kosovo Ernesto Inarkiev is firmly in pole position. However, the battle is not only about first place. The players are also competing for invitations to the World Cup (the first 23 participants get a ticket) as well as for cash (22 main prizes plus 10 additional prizes). Not to mention the creative aspect, which as usual is the focus of our commentator Alexei Yarovinsky, who reflects on several fragments from round 9 below.

  • Another Russian celebrates his victory

  • Going into the fourth round of the European Championship in Gjakova two Georgian GMs were among the competitors yet to lose a game: that country’s undisputed number one Baadur Jobava and the experienced Zurab Sturua, who has been one of the top players on the veterans circuit in recent years. But last night their paths diverged. For how long, though?

    JOBAVA - PARLIGRAS

  • The second round of the European Championship in Gjakova saw a number of fierce battles. The only exceptions were a few games between compatriots that ended in harmless draws: between the Czech players Hracek and Navara, and between Belarusians Stupak and Zhigalko.

  • Nine players have yet to lose a game after the third round of the European Championship in Gjakova. This set of competitors includes Baadur Jobava, who the previous day had stayed true to his original style and deliberately adopted a somewhat worse position against Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, provoking the Armenian GM to charge forward with reckless abandon, for which he was duly punished.
