Two out of four semi-finalists have been decided in the classical games of the World Cup. Anish Giri joined Pavel Eljanov who won his match against Hikaru Nakamura. Dutch GM's opponent was Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The winner commented on the game for Chess-News.

Giri: "It felt like my opponent was playing strictly for a draw and was sort of preparing himself for the tiebreak. He decided not to develop some ambitious plans in the opening for several times. He preferred to torture himself, but eventually his choices just punished himself. I wasn't surprised when he sacrificed the pawn in the beginning of the game. While discussing with one of my seconds what I was going to play today I pointed at the position I wouldn't wish to play. In that position he would have a compensation for the pawn, but he likes giving away pawns even without compensation. Then we thought - let's look for the positions where he wouldn't have such compensation! Well, as you can see we found such a position.

Maxime is a very strong player with a great sense of dynamics, but he often likes giving away pawns without any real compensation. He pushes ...c5 in all Grunfeld positions, wherever he can. That's typical for him. He manages to hold afterwards quite usually."

Giri and Eljanov will have two free days - one during tomorrow's tiebreaks and the day after, which is an official free day according to the regulations. Anish hasn't thought yet how is going to spend them:

"I can't say I am that happy about the fact or not. Am I tired? Within the normal limits I would say. Let's see how it goes. It happens that you don't feel tired but then suddenly blunder terribly and can't even explain what has happened. That is when you think that fatigue got you. Well, two rest days are better than one. We walk a lot, which is pretty tiring already... We'll find what to do."
