FIDE World Cup: Eljanov eliminates Nakamura, waits for the semi-final

Pavel Eljanov evaluated his return game against Nakamura as "unexpectedly simple." He won the match 1.5-0.5 and gave Chess-News a commentary.

"Hikaru didn't play as aggressively as I expected. He is an aggressive player and could do whatever in the opening - I was even considering 1.f4. But as strange as it may seem, it's been the fourth game during this competition when I got to play the same variation. I decided to deviate from my usual play and perhaps that was a good decision, because I got a comfortable position without any problems.

I could see he wasn't happy with the opening - probably he expected me to repeat my previous games. He had a pair of bishops but it was still hard to convert them into anything. The position on the other hand didn't really dispose to sharp play. It's noteworthy that he had a structure similar to this one in the game he won against Caruana. Although the game was equal, Fabiano made three mistakes which cost him a point. Perhaps, one mistake here wouldn't be enough for the other side to win..."
