Pavel Eljanov evaluates his completed match against Dmitry Jakovenko as equal. However, he took the upper hand over his Russian rival in the tiebreak.

"Both of the classical games saw balanced fights, - the winner recalls. - White pushed a little both times, but eventually those games finished in logical draws. And today, it was White again to put pressure in both rapid games. In the first encounter, my position was quite unpleasant, but it looks like I have defended well. After the opening of the second game, it seemed to me I gained some advantage - it is very hard to hold such a position with the white pawn on d6. I had a simple improvement plan, and everything went in the best possible way for me."

"I have been participating in FIDE World Cups since 2005 and my best result up to 2015 was reaching the third round. That's why I feel pretty comfortable being already in the fifth round. It's already a great result, but I will try to go as far as possible. Time will tell.

How do I spend rest days? I visit the spa, they have a very good one here. My routine is the gym, the swimming pool and the sauna. I also walk... Nothing special. In such competitions, it's better to have a proper rest on a free day, and that's what I do."

Pavel Eljanov's commentary in full (in Russian) is available in the audio player.
