Only four games of the 1/16 final at the FIDE World Cup were decisive. Sergey Karjakin outplayed Yu Yangyi, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Sethuraman, victories were also celebrated by Fabiano Caruana and Pavel Eljanov over Anton Kovalyov and Alexander Grischuk respectively.

Moreover, Eljanov stays the only player at the World Cup maintaining a perfect score (although for the knock-out competition like this it's nothing but an interesting statistical detail).

Eljanov commented on the game for Chess-News:

"It was an incredibly tough game. I guess my play in the opening wasn't the most precise. Until I blundered 23.b3 the position was absolutely equal. Then I was facing some problems, which I think I was solving pretty successfully. The pressure maintained with every move. I hoped to play for a win at some point, but Sasha went on with a wild position in the time trouble. Frankly speaking, I didn't expect that. I didn't even consider his king could come out. That reminded me of my infamous game against Khismatullin in which I played the victim's role. I did something similar in that game, but I got checkmated immediately. Sasha, on the contrary, was finding the ways to defend.."

GRISCHUK - ELJANOV

The rook just moved from f6 to g6, but Grischuk missed his chance: 38.a7! Qf1+ 39.Kh4,and 39...Qg2 can be followed either by 40.Qf5 or by 40.h3.
38.Kh4? Qb4? Black is again kindly providing opportunities for White. Russian GM again misses queen maneuver on f5: 39.Qf5! Qxb3 40.Ra5.
39.Kh3? Rg5! 40.Qf7 Qc5! (a timely precision by Black) 41.g4 Qc1 42.a7 h5! 43.Qxh5+ Rxh5+ 44.gxh5 Qc8+ 45.Kg3 Qa8

It's not that easy to win this position, but it's not impossible either. White can't hold the fortress for a long time, since either Black king will reach the h5-pawn, or the e4-pawn will break through. After helping his opponent a little more, Grischuk resigned on move 56. 0-1

Pavel Eljanov's commentary (in Russian) at full is available in the audio player. Pavel also confessed Grischuk is one of his most uncomfortable opponents: "Until now I have defeated him only once - in a blitz game..."
