Biel: Two Rounds to Go, Nothing Is Clear Except the Outsider

Время публикации: 29.07.2015 05:35 | Последнее обновление: 30.07.2015 01:14

The main tournament in Biel, in which more than 50% of the games so far were decisive, is approaching its finish. There are two rounds to go, yet the fate of the first prize is not obvious at all. Radoslaw Wojtaszek and David Navara are in the lead with 5 points each; Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who is half a point behind, is in turn followed by Michael Adams with 4 points. Pavel Eljanov has 3.5 points. Moreover, the leaders will face each other in the last round.

Wojtaszek emerged in the lead thanks to his important victory against Vachier-Lagrave in round 7. The Frenchman made a strategic mistake right after the opening.

WOJTASZEK - VACHIER-LAGRAVE

15.f3-f4 was almost instantly met by 15...e4? (instead of the correct 15...exd4 opening the e-file). Now White has a clear plan of advancing his pawns on the queenside, while Black has no real counterplay. Wojtaszek went on to win the game quite confidently.

The only thing that is already quite clear about the tournament is who's the outsider. In the first leg, Richard Rapport had managed to make four draws, but he has lost already thrice in a row in the second half. Now the creative Hungarian GM is in clear last place by a wide margin.

Rapport quickly lost a strategic battle to Adams in round 7 and was able to resist for 118 moves only because Mickey chose a long technical way instead of finishing Black off by the direct attack before the time control. Then, in the yesterday's round, Richard went for a reckless pawn sacrifice against Navara, causing his own position to collapse soon.

The "hairstyle vs suit" battle ended in favour of the suit

Vachier-Lagrave managed to remind the spectators that the Marshall attack isn't a dead draw yet. Supposedly, Adams got punished for his realization inaccuracies in the previous round, since it's difficult to explain his strange 26th move by anything else than his tiredness. After Black offered his opponent a free pair of bishops, turning a decent endgame into a difficult one at once, Vachier-Lagrave was relentless in the technical stage.

The most experienced participant has been alternating wins with losses

Pavel Eljanov was very persistent in converting a small advantage against Wojtaszek, as the victory would have let the Ukrainian leave the "minus" zone after all. However, the result of Eljanov's efforts was only a drawish ending "R+N vs R".

The 9th round will begin today at 15.00 Moscow time (13.00 London time).
