The Pawn Falls Short. Eljanov Misses Chance of Second Victory in Biel

In round five of the Biel tournament, all three games were drawn. Thus, David Navara ends the first cycle as sole leader. Today, he drew confidently as Black with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

But Pavel Eljanov could have won his second game in a row.

ELJANOV - RAPPORT

White has played the whole game against the "bad" bishop, thanks to which he has obtained a decisive advantage. But the bishop has just managed to come into play, whilst White's own bishop is cut off on h5. This was the moment to bring it into the game: 38.Be8! (or 38.Bf7 with the same ideas) 38...Bg2 39.Bb5 (Threat Re8+ and a8Q) 39...Rd8 40.Bc4+ Kh8, and White should gradually win, although he needs to show technique. Black still stands solidly for the moment, but in this case, simply waiting is insufficient. The main thing the Ukrainian forgot about during the game is that the a7-pawn is worth more than the bishop it can be sold for at once.
38.Re8+? Kg7 39.a8Q? It was still possible to play 39.Re7+ Kf6 40.Rf7+ Ke6 41.Rxh7, but here the win is rather more complicated, since Black has managed to activate his king.
39...Bxa8 40.Rxa8 d3 41.Ra7+ Kh6 42.exd3 Rxd3 43.Ra6+ Kg7 44.Ra7+ Kh6 1/2

Round six is tomorrow at 15.00 Moscow time.
