"Sometimes You Have to Be Practical"

Veselin Topalov wins Norway Chess 2015 despite being unable to sustain his concentration like 10 years ago

The first stage of the new Grand Chess Tour series is over, and its outcome could have been predicted a few rounds ago atfer Topalov's 5.5/6. His yesterday's defeat against Anish Giri seemed to have revived the intrigue, but not for a long time. Today Viswanathan Anand, who was Black against the leader, decided not to go too far, and the game was drawn very quickly.

There aren't many short draws like this in Topalov's career, and he even apologized to the public in the press centre: "Sometimes you have to be practical. I hope everybody understands this..."

A few more quotes from Topalov's today press conference:

"When you're playing against 1.d4, there are not so many ways even to keep on playing without taking risks. Look at Magnus [trying to get winning chances]; I think he's done some complete rubbish."

"That's only the beginning of the Grand Chess Tour, so there's no tragedy in being second [about Anand]"

"I am obviously very happy, but I'm also a bit surprised. Because honestly I didn't expect it. As I said, I was coming to make a "+1", which I thought would be a great result, maybe third place. I expected youngsters always to fight for the win here, not myself. But it's pleasant to know that you can still fight somehow. Now I'm looking forward to the next Grand Chess Tour tournament in Saint Louis".

"From the four events I played in the FIDE Grand Prix 2012-13, I got less than 200.000 euro. Here I got $75000, so it's comparable. For the winner it's more or less similar, but the FIDE series was much weaker".

"Now there are really many, many good players. The computer makes us equal. There is a very little difference between the players now. Only small details make difference, and sometimes even a lack of concentration, like it happened to Hammer or Magnus. It's not related to the chess abilities they have, obviously, but it happens".

"Am I able to sustain my concentration during games the way I did before? No, not really. I play much more relaxed now. When you are thirty it's easier than when you are forty".

"I used to do a lot more sports. Now it's nothing compared to before. I spend maximum 4-5 hours a day on chess preparation when I'm at home. And also not every day -  not on holidays which we have quite often (smiles). It was also the reason I didn't play in Shamkir: we had planned to have holidays with my family, and then, when the organizers changed the dates, I just had to decline. My priorities have changed..."
