After the day-off, Magnus Carlsen has finally managed to win a game in Norway Chess 2015. The one who fell prey to him in round 5 was Alexander Grischuk.

The Russian managed to equalize with Black but spent a lot of time, as usual. After the game, he admitted overestimating his position a bit: "I thought I had no problems whatsoever, but in fact I need to be quite accurate after this forced sequence with 24.c4 and 26.c5. Then I missed 30.Bd5! after which I should be really accurate. The position was very hard to play in time trouble, because you need to calculate in order to make good moves..."

This is the position just before the time control, where Carlsen had 21 minites against only 18 seconds on Grischuk's clock. The Norwegian took his time to find the most cunning way. 6 minites were enough for him to succeed:
40.f4!? The machine considers 40.g4 and 40.Kg3 to be even stronger, but this is the case one can neglect a well-known advice: "If your opponent is in time trouble, do not think about it and look for the strongest move anyway".
40...exf4? Grischuk made this mistake when only 3 seconds were remaining on his clock. The most simple would have been 40...f6 with good drawing chances. More complicated 40...Qb8!? is also possible, trying to chase the white king, but this isn't a move one usually makes in time trouble.
41.Qxe8+ Bxe8 42.Bxf7 The endgame is lost, since the black king can't approach the d-pawn
42...Bc6+ 43.Kf2 fxg3+ 44.Kxg3. An important line is now 44...g5 45.hxg6 Kg7 46.Kg4 Bb5 (46...Bd7+ 47.Kh5 releasing the f7-bishop) 47.Kf5 Ba4 48.Ke6 h5 49.d7 (49.Kf5 also wins) 49...Bxd7 50.Kxd7 h4 51.Ke6 h3 52.Kf5 h2 53.Bd5.
44...Bd7 45.Bg6 1-0

There are 4 rounds to go. In round 6, the world champion will be White again, this time against Hikaru Nakamura who is two points ahead.
