Batsiashvili or Zhukova? European Women's Title Could Be Decided in Penultimate Round

Время публикации: 29.05.2015 12:02 | Последнее обновление: 29.05.2015 16:20

In the ninth round of the European Women's Championship in Chakvi, the Georgian derby Melia-Batsiashvili on top board ended in a draw. On the next board, Natalya Zhukova won and is now only half a point behind the leader.

KHOTENASHVILI - ZHUKOVA

A few moves ago, White sacrificed the exchange in a worse position and was losing. However, after the incautious 24...Kh8? Natalya gave her opponent a chance, which she could have exploited three moves in a row, but she missed the tactic:
25.f5? (25.Rxg7! Rxf1+ 26.Kg2 Qa2+ 27.Kg3 or 27.Kxf1, and there is no defence against perpetual check on the squares g5 and f6) 25...Re1 26.Qh4? Qa1 27.Qe7? Rg8, and she got no more chances to save the game. 0-1 on move 45.

In today's tenth round the draw has naturally paired Batsiashvili against Zhukova. The Georgian has White, and a win will assure her the European title. A win for Zhukova will put her in first place with one round to go. Four other players have only theoretical chances to fight for gold.
