"Extremely lucky". Evgeny Tomashevsky Starts the Decisive Grand Prix Stage with a Victory

In Khanty-Mansiysk, the first round of the decisive stage of the Grand Prix series was played today. The two players with the best emotions were the Russians Tomashevsky and Jakovenko, who beat Jobava and Giri respectively.

The course of the game involving the GP leader was far from trivial.

"I tricked myself in the opening", admitted Evgeny at the press conference. "In the line of the Slav we played, the main reply to 6.b3 is 6...Bb4, and not 6...с5. I don't know why I didn't play it. The line with 6...с5 is fairly risky, as Black loses several tempi. The idea was, after b6, Bb7 to get a fairly standard position, which can arise from many lines of the Queen's Gambit. But then I could not remember at which point to play the important move b7-b6. And without this, White got a clear advantage and up to a certain point, the game was all one-way traffic. Later I was extremely lucky. It was one of those cases where a single mistake can strategically cost the game..."

JOBAVA - TOMASHEVSKY

This position can be assessed as strategically winning for White. Tomashevsky was right in saying that "there could have been no fight in the game at all". But from here, the Georgian started to lose the thread of the game.
22.Bxc4? Simpler is 22.Qb3 followed by taking twice on c4.
22...dxc4 23.Rb4? White could still keep the advantage after 23.b6 Qb8 24.Ne2, but Black has chances in the complications after 24...e5 25.Nxe5 Bf5 26.Qxc4 Bxb1 27.Qxf7+ Kh7 28.Bf4 Bc2 29.Rc1 Rf8 30.Qc4 Be4 31.Nxg6 Qc8 32.Nxf8+ Rxf8, and the realisation will not be easy.
No better is 24.Qa2 e5 25.dxe5 Bf5 26.exf6 Rxe1+ 27.Nxe1 Bxf6.
23...e5! Suddenly it turns out that "Black is not worse" (Tomashevsky). The winner agreed that it was easier to play what is effectively a new game than his opponent and so his time-trouble ceased to play a great role.
24.b6 Qb8 25.Rxe5?! Jobava: "As often happens, I lost control over the position and continued to play for a win out of inertia. The position already does not permit this..." Correct was 25.dxe5 Bf5 26.Qb2 Nd7 27.c6 bxc6 28.Rxc4, with mutual chances.
25...Rxe5 26.dxe5 Bf5 27.Qe2 Bd3 28.Qe3?! (Possibly the last chance was to retreat the queen to e1) 28...Nd7 29.Nd5?, and Black confidently conducted the game to victory.  0-1

The hand of Ugra vice-governor Alexey Putin played the first move in the game Jakovenko - Giri, and proved lucky for Dmitry, who regards this area as his own. The Russian forced his opponent's resignation on move 61 and now occupies second place in the overall GP standings.

Games from today's round.
