For the second year, Magnus Carlsen leaves Shamkir a happy man

The Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir ended with a seven-hour battle between Anish Giri and Vladimir Kramnik. Neither wanted to end up sharing last place, but in the end, it was the Dutchman who did so. Kramnik commented that in the last round, he had no energy at all, but still managed to hold a difficult ending a pawn down.

Earlier Carlsen had given Mamedov the birthday present of a defeat, and for the second year, leaves Shamkir as the winner. He did not hide the fact that he was delighted by this. "It was great last time, but this was even better! If I am invited, I will be back next year."

At the closing ceremony, Vugar Gashimov's father thanked everyone involved with the organisation and running of the event - the players, journalists, guests, and the bosses of "Synergy Group". A long evening ended with dinner in the open air.

As already reported, the tournament director did not give a definitive answer to the question of whether the event will be run next year, but thought it highly probable.
