Shamkir: Carlsen will play five Blacks, starting with Anand

For the second time, Shamkir has welcomed the participants in the Gashimov Memorial. The line-up includes last year's top two, the "Two C's" Carlsen and Caruana, plus Kramnik, Anand, So, Giri, Vachier-Lagrave, Mamedyarov, Adams and Mamedov. It is a single cycle all-play-all.

The draw was conducted by the chief arbiter Faik Gasanov, who called the players up to the stage in descending order of rating. The first to appear was Magnus Carlsen, who picked number 7. You can see his reaction from the photograph, and later the world champion added "It's a terrible draw for me: five Blacks and a tough start tomorrow against Anand."

Round one pairings (round starts tomorrow at 13.00 Мoscow time):
Anand - Carlsen
Kramnik - Adams
So - Giri
Mamedov - Vachier-Lagrave
Mamedyarov - Caruana

Vladimir Kramnik was asked to reply to the compliment paid to him three days ago by Carlsen, who said "I respect all the players in the tournament. They are all very strong. But for some reason I find Kramnik the most difficult to play against". Kramnik did not think long over his response: "He is probably saying that because, unlike most others, I am the only one who doesn't have a catastrophic score against him. But that will soon change..."

Kramnik arrived early this morning and managed to spend some time resting and walking around the city. He liked what he saw, and one of the local residents even told him he looks like an Azeri.

Evgeny Surov, who was at the opening ceremony, will post a photo-report shortly.
