Bad Round for China

WWCC: Khotenashvili - Huang Qian match ends in an inexplicable way

The Chinese delegation has suffered a very serious blow: as many as five of its participants have been eliminated from the tournament bracket in the second round. Ju Wenjun, Shen Yang, Tan Zhongyi, and Lei Tingjie have been defeated in the classical part, while Huang Qian committed a tragic blunder in the blitz. Thus, Zhao Xue, who has beaten Salome Melia 1.5 to 0.5, is the only Chinese player to continue fighting for the world title in Krasnaya Polyana.

The match between Bela Khotenashvili and Huang Qian was the longest battle of round 2. The struggle was level up to the 5'+3" time control. Then, the nerves started to tell. The Georgian WGM won the first game, taking advantage of White's error on move 52, although Huang Qian's position was already difficult. In the next encounter, Khotenashvili got a very solid endgame with a symmetrical pawn structure only to ruin it completely in a few moves. Soon it came to a kind of position where most of high-level players would resign.

KHOTENASHVILI - HUANG QIAN (round 2, blitz game 2)

Then, an inexplicable 40...Rxc3?? was played. The Georgian was having a few seconds against more than a minite for the Chinese. Having taken the rook, White, of course, reached the draw easily. Huang Qian left in tears.

Another notorious blunder by the same player comes to mind: 2010, Chess Olympiad, an important match between Russia and China. Huang Qian's game was crucial for its outcome.

GUNINA - HUANG QIAN (Olympiad, 2010)

57...Qe1+?? 58.Qxe1 1-0

Among the other results, Anna Ushenina's loss to Marie Sebag should be mentioned. In the first rapid game, the winner of the previous knockout (held in 2012) was forfeited for showing up late: due to some error, Ushenina's smartphone had automatically switched to Ukrainian time which is one hour behind Russian time. Here in Krasnaya Polyana, the zero tolerance rule applies, as usual for FIDE official championships.

The opening of the next game went in her favour thanks to a clever idea 10.Nxd5! (first played by Giri against Mamedyarov, Tashkent 2014). However, the endgame technique has let the Ukrainian down, while Sebag was defending well.

Zhao Xue - Khotenashvili

  • All games of the 7th round of the Women's Grand Prix taking place in Geneva finished decisively. In addition only Anna Muzychuk managed to win with white pieces. In other five games the wins were celebrated by the players with black pieces: Khotenashvili defeated Cmilyte, Ju Wenjun beat Ushenina, Dzagnidze defeated Girya, Kosteniuk took an upper hand on Tuvshintugs and Hou Yifan was stronger than Kateryna Lahno.
