World Women's Championship has been inaugurated in Sochi

The World Women's Championship is now officially open. The inauguration ceremony took place in Grand Hotel Polyana, where the participants are accommodated. Tomorrow, on March 17th, the first round of the knock out tournament will begin at 12:00 GMT time.

The opening ceremony saw the speeches by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, mayor of Sochi Anatoly Pakhomov, and President of Russian Chess Federation Andrey Filatov. Advisor to President of Russia, Igor Levitin, has read the President's greetings to the participants and guests.

After the speeches had been said, the chief arbiter Zsuzsa Veroci invited Humpy Koneru, the rating favorite, on the stage. The Indian player was offered to choose one of the two boxes. Having preferred the box on her right, she pulled a white flower out of it, which means that all the players with odd starting numbers, Koneru to begin with, will be White in their first games.

The ceremony has ended by the musical concert which repertoire consisted mainly of jazz. The pictures by Evgeny Surov will be published soon; see also his first photo report.

  • The opening ceremony of the World Championship match will commence in the Russian city of Sochi today at 17:00 GMT. The press conference with Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand and the organizers will begin 1.5 hours earlier (15:30 GMT).
