An annual open tournament is starting in the capital of Iceland.

While the open is not the most famous event of this kind, its history is very long. In early years, it used to be a closed round-robin held once in 2 years; Mikhail Tal won the first edition with impressive 12.5/13. In the 1980's, the event changed its format into an open tournament which became annual since 2008.

As a rule, the organizers have been able to engage several famous grandmasters; this year's starting rank list is being topped by an impressive trio - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2756), David Navara (2736), and Pavel Eljanov (2727).

On the other hand, the field has lost many female players in comparison to the previous editions, as most of them are going to Sochi for the World Women's Championship which will begin in a few days.

Among the peculiarities of the regulations, one could mention the doubled rounds on March 11, and the possibility of taking two half-a-point byes during the first seven rounds; if a participant wants to use it twice, one of the byes must take place on March 11. There are 10 rounds total, the 1st one to begin on March 10th at 15:00 GMT.

Besides, Magnus Carlsen will be the tournament's guest of honour from March 13th to March 16th. The World Champion's father, Henrik Carlsen, and one of his main seconds, Jon Ludvig Hammer, are both participating in Reykjavik Open, the official website informs. The 2014 edition was similarly visited by Garry Kasparov.
