Kirill Stupak Wins Belarusian Championship Again

Two Belarusian individual championships (men's and women's) have come to an end simultaneously in the city of Minsk. Both tournaments were held according to round-robin system, with 12 players in the men's tournament and 10 in the women's.

The best female player of Belarus, IM Nastassia Ziazulkina (2429) had chosen to play in the men's event and finished 7th, while the winner was GM Kirill Stupak (2557) who becomes the national champion for the second time in a row. In the last round, Stupak outplayed exactly Ziazulkina. All the games by the champion can be found in the viewer.

Final standings: 1. Stupak, 2. Aleksandrov Al. - 7.5 points out of 11; 3. Zhigalko S. - 7; 4-5. Zhigalko A., Majorov - 5.5, etc.

In the female championship, Lanita Stetsko (2297) took clear first with 7 points out of 9.

  • The Belarusian Chess Championship finished in Minsk. The only female participant Anastasia Ziazulkina had a successful start but by the end of the tournament stuck and managed to take only a point in four rounds. As a result she finished 9th. Kirill Stupak, on the contrary, took advantage of the finishing part of the tournament which eventually decided the winner of the championship. Stupak gathered 9 out of 13, Alexey Aleksandrov stayed half a poitn behind, while four players gathered 8 points.      

  • 3 rounds are over in the Australian Open which is under way in the suburb of Sydney. So far, 6 players have got the perfect score: Ni Hua, Murtas Kazhgaleyev, Eugene Schon, Steven Yap Kim, Gregory Canfell, and the incumbent Australian champion Max Illingworth. A group of 12 players including 5 GMs have 2.5/3 (see complete current standings).

  • The first playing day of the World Blitz Championship has finished in Berlin. The 21-round Swiss competition will resume tomorrow.

    Maxime Vachier-Lagrave had an ambitious start of 5/5, but in the sixth round he was stopped by Magnus Carlsen. Then both of them gained several victories in a row, but once the routine seemed unstoppable, Sergey Karjakin put it all upside down by defeating Carlsen in the 11th round.

  • Today in Danzhou, the sixth annual tournament ended, featuring several top players, two young hopefuls and two well-known foreign guests from Cuba and India, in a round robin event. The tournament will mainly be remembered for one particular game, which has been hailed as the "game of the century". Admittedly, the winner Wei Yi, who produced a whole series of !! moves, won only one other game in the event and finished fourth. 

  • The first round of the Russia-China match has taken place in Ningbo. 

  • The Azerbaijan men's championship (Swiss-system, 22 players) has finished in Baku. The Elo favorite Rauf Mamedov has scored 6.5 points out of 9; the same score has been achieved by Eltaj Safarli and Vasif Durarbaili, but Mamedov was declared the champion on tiebreak.

    Rauf Mamedov, who was in the lead throughout the tournament distance, won the crucial game against Nijat Abasov in round 8. Then, a draw in the final round was enough for him to get the title.

  • Belarusian Chess championships among men and women are held in Minsk. Anastasia Ziazulkina decided to participate in men's section: after Round 7 she has +2. She has defeated Sergey Zhigalko (2682, the rating favourite), Valery Smirnov (2327, after loss to Anastasia, he withdrew), Aleksandr Kocheev 2391; Ziazulkina has lost only in Round 1 against Vitaly Teterev (2507). 

  • Both the men's and women's matches in round two of the Russia-China match ended in draws. In both cases, the two sides exchanged blows: in the women's event, young wife Alina Kashlinskaya won, but her friend and witness at her wedding, Valentina Gunina, lost; in the men's event, Fedoseev lost, but the Wei Yi - Svidler game ended in favour of the older star, who has been shining for already two decades. 

  • GM Aleksej Aleksandrov took clear first at Minsk Open with 7.5 out of 9. Five finished half a point behind: Lintchevski of Russia, Podolchenko and Stupak of Belarus, Ukrainian Nosenko and FIM Trifonov. The legendary Viktor Kupreichik finished 12 with six points. Overall there were 117 participants.

  • Just as with Garry Kasparov, Anish Giri has also achieved a personal milestone for the fourth time: he has again won the Dutch Championship. In a round-robin tournament, eight GMs competed for the title, almost all the strongest representatives of the country, excluding Ivan Sokolov. 

    Despite the short diatance, Giri won the title more than convincingly.
