Computer Could Win That

Giri persists but Ivanchuk manages to hold

As expected, Magnus Carlsen beat Hou Yifan in the 7th round of the main Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee, although the game was by no means easy. Then, the world champion's place in the current standings had to be determined by the result of the game between Anish Giri and Vassily Ivanchuk, which was still going on.

The Giri - Ivanchuk battle lasted 7 hours; on the photo, you can see Anish Giri shortly after its finish, trying to grasp the win shown for White by the machine on move 90. Perhaps conducting it over the board was actually possible for a computer only.

GIRI - IVANCHUK

The main idea, however, is pretty clear: first of all, White has to drag the black king onto the g-file, in order to combine the threats of exchanging queens as well as penetrating by the queen to g7: 90.Qd6+! Kg8 91.Qe5!
The immediate threat is 92.Qе8+. Now the play can go on like this:
91...Qg6+ 92.Kh4 Qh6+ 93.Kg4 winning;
91...Qa2 92.Qe8+ Kh7 93.Qe4+ Kg8 94.Kh6 Qh2+ 95.Qh4, and the pawn ending is lost for Black;
91...Qc1+ 92.Qf4! Qc2! 93.Qg4! Kf8 94.Qb4+ Kg8 95.Qb8+ Kh7 96.Qe5! Qd2+ 97.Qf4 Qg2 (the other replies don't help either) 98.Qh4+ Kg8 99.Kh5 Qc2 100.Qg4+ Kf8 101.Qg7+ - White is finally winning the f7-pawn, and the rest will be simple.

The game went: 90.Qd4 Qg6+ 91.Kf4 Qh6+ 92.Kf3 Qh5+ 93.g4. Occupying the square which would be very important for the queen, as can be seen from the lines given above. However, there was hardly anything better already. 93...Qh1+ 94.Kf4 Qf1+ 95.Kg5 Qc1+ 96.Qf4 Qb1!, and it appears that White cannot make progress. In a few more moves, the scoresheets were signed. 1/2

The game started with a fashionable line of the Slav (strictly speaking, the position is more similar to the Catalan opening), in which Giri himself had been defeated by Vladimir Kramnik in the key game of the Qatar Masters Open. Unlike Giri in that encounter, Ivanchuk has demonstrated very good preparation and got an advantage. However, his 22th move was the turning point.

22...Rac8? was followed by 23.Bf1 regaining material. Instead, Black could play 22...Qc6! giving White a hard choice of either 23.Ra3 Re5 24.Qa2 Qc7 or 23.Rb4 b5!! (even better than the simple 23...Nxa5 24.Qa4 [what else?] 24...Qxa4 25.Rxa4 b6 26.Rd4 f5 27.Rd5 Nb3, which is also advantageous for Black) 24.axb6 a5 winning an exchange.

As a result, Giri equalized the position and soon began to play for a win himself. Maybe Ivanchuk did not consider the queen endgame to be so dangerous, but in fact it was very crafty. Giri kept creating small problems for Black and won a pawn eventually. Queen endings with 2 pawns vs 1 at one side are generally considered to be drawn, but here the defence was harder than usual due to slightly atypical pawn configuration (compared to, for instance, g+h vs h). At the end, the young Dutchmen's persistence could be awarded with the full point, but... The rest of the story is already known.

After 7 rounds, Ivanchuk and Carlsen have 5 points each. 3 players are half-a-point behind: Vachier-Lagrave, So, and Ding Liren.
