Hikaru Nakamura grabbed the sole lead after defeating Gelfand

Two results of the 5th round have significantly changed the tournament situation in Tashkent: Dmitry Jakovenko defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave as a result of his better opening preparation, while Hikaru Nakamura outplayed Boris Gelfand in a long battle, thus becoming the new sole leader. Baadur Jobava has also joined the pursuing group after his neat tactical victory over Sergey Karjakin as Black.

For the second time in the tournament, Gelfand was unable to defend a worse endgame.

NAKAMURA - GELFAND

It's basically the same situation as a couple of days ago in Mamedyarov - Gelfand: a draw is somewhere close but yet has to be made. Besides, time trouble is a hindrance again, as Boris had only about 2 minites here. After the end of the game, the players have concluded that the best way would have been 87...Kg8! 88.Rxf6 Ra4 89.Rg6+ (89.Ne7+ Kg7 90.Rxf4 Ng5 is even more simple for Black) 89...Kh8 90.Re6 Ra2 - it's unclear how White can make progress.
However, Gelfand played 87...Ng5? 88.Rxf6+ Kg8 89.e5 (this would also follow after more persistent 88...Ke8) 89...Ra2 90.e6 Nf3+ 91.Kh3 Ng1+ 92.Kh4 Rxg2 93. Kh5 Nf3 94. Nxh6+ Kh7 95. Rf7+ Kh8 96. e7 Re2 97. Rxf4. Note that 97.Rf8+ Kg7 98.e8Q?? is suddenly losing due to 98..Rh2#!. Now Black resigned (1-0).

"Do you feel affected by the weather that has been changed so rapidly from autumn to winter?", Gelfand was asked during the press conference. (The temperature has dropped almost to the Moscow level in Tashkent that day.)
"That's no problem", Gelfand replied.
"Boris is not quite as young", Nakamura added. "After playing for 6 hours it's more difficult to do well..."

Jakovenko - Vachier-Lagrave was a battle in a fashionable line of the Anti-Grunfeld.

"During the preparation, I've seen that Maxime had already played it as Black vs Gajewski and lost. I didn't think that Maxime would repeat it because after more or less forced moves Black just fights for a draw, without almost any chance to win", Dmitry explained. "Maybe Maxime had analysed this to a draw, but then he must have failed to remember something..."
Jakovenko's 15.с6!? was a novelty, while his preparation ended after Vachier-Lagrave's 18...Bb2. By the time, it was already an endgame in which White's extra pawn outweighed Black's compensation.
