The Armenian Grandmaster has confirmed his participation in the FIDE World Cup 2015

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's recent visit to Yerevan has revealed the fact that Levon Aronian has agreed to take part in the FIDE World Cup 2015 despite it will take place in Baku, according to Ilyumzhinov's assistant Berik Balgabaev. The latter says in his Twitter that Aronian has confirmed that in person during the lunch given by President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.

The issue of whether the Armenian players are going to participate in the Chess Olympiad 2016 and FIDE World Cup 2015 has been unclear since Azerbaijan had been given the right to host those events. Thus, Aronian's participation can be a solution of key political importance to resolve the prolonged crisis.

As the Vice-President of Azerbaijan Chess Federation Mahir Mammadov said in February 2012 during his interview for the Russian version of our website [talking about another tournament though]:

"We have to do something to initiate the peace process. So, why shouldn't Levon Aronian be one of the initiators? If he comes it would be something else than if the boxers come. It would improve the situation a lot... [...] Aronian is the player of the highest level, the one who can dismiss obtrusive thoughts and perform well. We can provide him any excellent conditions, I can even accommodate him in my home".
