Sveshnikov: "Neither Kasparov Nor Carlsen Can Refute My Openings"

Evgeny Sveshnikov has shared his impressions on the recent match with Chess-News. Let us remind you that the outcome was catastrophic for the veteran who lost 0.5 to 5.5. However, Evgeny keeps his spirits up:

"Immediately after the end of the match... well, I had an urge to abandon serious chess and forget about playing at this level. As well as to throw in the towel and just keep silence. However, it changed after I had analysed my games and spoken to the commentators. I realised that Alexei's superiority hadn't been really as much as it could seem from the score. Moreover, that was me who played more creatively.

I wanted to win the opening battle, and I reached this goal in almost all of the games! As White, Shirov was never even slightly better right away after the openings. His only opening success occurred in game 5 when he faced my 10.a4 novelty, then delved into the position and found the precise way. Speaking about game 6, it was very bad luck for me because I had spent only 1 minite looking at the position after 17.Bxa8 at home - so, I was unable to remember the correct continuation over the board... At the same time, it was the 4th game for me that day, I couldn't calculate well, and the position wasn't the one you can play just by intuition.

My big mistakes were that I had agreed to play with the 50+10 time limit suggested by Alexei as well as to play 2 final games in the morning (Alexei had to leave early and asked me for this favour). All that gave additional advantage to my younger opponent.

At the same time, I admit that Shirov stands head and shoulder above me in practical play now. In this match, it was even twice than that... Nevertheless, I think the games themselves were good enough.

I'm thinking about challenging Shirov to the return match, however funny it may seem. Let me repeat that I outplayed him in the openings while many novelties prepared for the match haven't been used. I assure you that neither Kasparov nor Carlsen can refute my opening ideas."

"I'd like to note that I had a coach during the match - my son Vladimir. I'm satisfied how our work went. He found a lot of new ideas including the 10.a4 novelty.

My rough estimate is that 5 to 10 thousand people were watching the match live, and this fact also makes me feel satisfied."
