Riga: First 2 Games Won By Shirov. With a Little Bit of Luck

The friendly match between Evgeny Sveshnikov and Alexey Shirov has started yesterday in the capital of Latvia. It consists of 6 games with the 50+10 time limit, 2 games each day.

The first day saw two victories by the younger GM. In game 1, Shirov punished his rival for the unnecessary materialism:

14.0–0–0? (in case of 14.0–0 Qxd2 15.Ng3 the game would be equal) 14...c4, and Black's queenside attack became brutal soon: 15.Nc3 Qa3+ 16.Kb1 Be6 17.Rhe1 Rab8 18.Ka1 cxb3 19.cxb3 Bxb3 20.Rxe8+ Rxe8 21.Rh1 Bc2 22.Nb1 Qb4 23.a3 Qb6 24.Qh4 Be4 25.Nc3 Rb8 26.Na4 Qd4+ 0–1

The second game was much more complicated. Sveshnikov opted for his own line - accelerated Sveshnikov variation! No wonder he played it excellently. On move 12, he deviated from Anand-Shirov (Linares 2002) where Shirov (as Black) had preferred 12...Bb7?!. Then, after the experimental 14.Rh3?! and the strong 16...Qh7! Black was already better. Sveshnikov was maintaining his advantage throughout the game but the final was dramatic.

37...f3? (after 37...e2 Black's advantage is decisive, because 38.Kd2?! fails to 38...Re8 39.Ke1 a4! - the check from a5 is a deadly threat - 40.c6 Bb6!) 38.gxf3 Rxf3 39.Rd7 Bf4?! 40.Bxf4 Rxf4 41.c6 Rxh4 42.Ba6 e2 43.Kd2

Black lost on time here (1-0), although the position is still unclear. The following variation is important: 43...Re4 44.Ke1 Rf4 45.Bxe2 Re4 46.c7 Rxe2+ 47.Kd1 Rc2 48.Rd8+ Kh7 49.c8Q Rxc8 50.Rxc8 h4 51.Rc3!

And nevertheless, the position seems to be difficult for Black.

There are 4 games left.
