The great champion back at the board (PHОТОS and GAMES)
The Sinquefield Cup participants are envolved in two entertaining events scheduled after the main competition. One of those was held tonight (Moscow time), the event "Ultimate Moves" was visited by the ex-champion Garry Kasparov.
Two Sinquefield teams of Rex (the sponsor of the event) and Randy (his son) competed.
Randy Sinquefield's team
Magnus Carlsen
Levon Aronian
Hikaru Nakamura
Veselin Topalov
(Rex and Randy Sinquefields also participated leading their teams)
The match started with two rapid games 25+2 followed by 4-8 blitz games In the rapid games, Rex and Randy each had two time-outs (60 seconds) to consult with their team. Rex and Randy will start the game, and after 5 moves, will rotate out and their 1st benched GMs will play the next 5 moves, and so on.
In the blitz games, Rex and Randy will alternate making moves with one of their GMs. Whomever loses that game will rotate out their GM for their 2nd. This process will continue until all the GMs from one bench or the other have lost.
The tournament has become one of just a few competitions Kasparov participated at in the past nine and a half years. The former world champion annnounced his retirement in Sping 2005. Since then he played a friendly match against Karpov in 2009 and a less promoted blitz-match against Short in 2011. The 13th World champion easily beat both of his rivals.
And now the fans could again see Garry at the board. He hasn't changed.

Not a lot has changed - the same face expressions (despite a friendly and entertaining nature of the event Kasparov was one of a few silent during his move, unlike others joiking around), same grimaces..
However, what was obvious this time is that Kasparov couldn't help but show how much he enjoys playing chess again: the correct moves of his team member were met with great enthusiasm, the mistakes faced a disappointed face.
Only two out of three games finished in Kasparov anf his team's favor. Below you can find the extracts from the live-tweeting (in Russian) we have done on our Twitter .
Rex Sinquefield blundered a queen against Carlsen. Kasparov preferred not to continue the game. He resigned.
The seond game is more tense. The players compete in an interesting endgame.
Carlsen just now "The position is such that they (White) have a trick, but I don't think the opponents will find it."
The second game finished in a draw (Kasparov advised Rex to go with a perpetual check - there's nothing more there).
Next is blitz.
Carlsen made a mistake, Kasparov rubs his hands in glee.
Blitz, Game 1: Randy Sinquefield/Carlsen 0-1 Rex Sinquefield/Kasparov
Blitz, Game 2: Rex/Kasparov 1-0 Randy/Aroninan. Next!
Garry made a move when it wasn't his turn. He has to take it back...
Rex Sinquefield promoted the pawn but didn't put up the queen. GMs from the opposite team are not going to excuse his mistake.
Rex/Kasprov team is forfeited in a completely winning position.
Kasparov: "Well, we lost technically not due to the positions, so I am glad with how we played three blitz games."
Rex Sinquefield, "I won three game: three for us, one for them."
The next bitz game is on. Kasparov gets his suit and leaves.
Kasparov, "The result doesn't matter, it was a feast for chess."
Rex blunders a rook (his bench is Caruana), the first "real" loss.
Now Randy/Topalov face Rex/Vachier-Lagrave.
Now Randy did castling moving the rook first, shouts of disapproval is heard in the hall, but the mistake is forgiven! The game continues.
The last game was drawn after all the adventurous events on the board (the rook endgames can't be won!).
It wasn't the last game though. Randy and Rex compete against each other int he last game.
Randy 1-0 Rex (time). Randy's team won 5-4.
Fantastic event at Sinquefield Cup. Great atmosphere! Headed to airport, St Louis to San Francisco for a speech. Hitting Putin, not a clock!
Garry Kasparov tweeted he now enjoyes holiday with the family after "very long and tiring FIDE campaign. I didn't win, but my team and I did a lot of good to promote chess," and added he is not going to "abandon our supporters or the many programs we created. Our friends & allies are for life & we keep our promises."
Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen had a secret meeting in Oslo on October 23rd, Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang reports. Prior to that, Kasparov had been taking part in 2014 Oslo Freedom Forum.
In the penultimate round of the Sinquefield Cup, Magnus Carlsen had White against Hikaru Nakamura and if he won, had the chance to close on the leader Levon Aronian.
After the first day of the friendly match between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short, the Englishman explained that his poor result was due to physical problems, which was affected by jetlag. Short promised to get some sleep, so as to improve his play on the second day. But he did not manage either of these things. "Crush" is the only word one can use to describe what Kasparov did to his opponent on the second day. The ex-world champion won all five games, one rapid and four blitz.
