The traditional Lake Sevan International chess tournament started in Martuni, Armenia on Sunday. It has gathered ten grandmasters.

Three share lead after two rounds: Sanan Sjugirov of Russia and Two Armenians Samvel Ter-Sahakyan and Hrant Melkumyan. Zaven Andiasian (Armenia), Santos Gujrathi (India) and Vladimir Fedoseyev (Russia). Ukrainians Areschenko and Kuzubov, as well as Armenian GM Gabuzyan yet have only 0.5 points each.

Here are two interesting extracts:

FEDOSEYEV - KUZUBOV (1st round)

The recent winner of the Ukrainian superfinal collapsed in an opening: 13...Nf6? 14.Nxb4 Bb7 15.Qe1 Nxe4 16.Nxa6! g5 17.Bb5+ Ke7 18.Nb4 Qc7 (18...gxf4 19.Bc6!) 19.Be3 g4 20.a5 Rb8 21.Bb6 Qc8 22.Ba7 d5 23.a6 Ba8 24.Bxb8 Qxb8 25.Nc6+ 1–0

SJUGIROV - FEDOSEYEV (2nd round)

with a beautiful ending. 40.g6!! fxg6 41.Ng5 (White dominates) 41...Rh4 (41...Rd8 would still be replied with f6: 42.Ng4!) 42.Nd5 Rh2+ 43.Kd1! (and now it is already easier) 43...Nd7 44.Ne7! Bg2 45.Rf2 Rh1+ 46.Kd2 1–0

Check out the games of the first two rounds.

Vachier-Lagrave who had a half point lead over his nearest rivals got not any considerable advantage in the opening against Anish Giri, however, to his credit he managed to literally torture and eventually outplay young grandmaster in a protracted fight.

Here's an interesting and important moment in the game.

  • Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura have drawn the classical games 3 and 4 after the exchange of blows in the first two encounters. Right now, they are playing the decisive part of their battle, namely a blitz match of 16 games.
