Caruana wins Dortmund one round to go

Italian grandmaster, the current world #4, secured first place at Dortmund competition one round to go. He managed to defeat Michael Adams in a very solid (in a high level games) Berlin variation in Ruy Lopez.

First 11 moves repeated Naiditsch - Caruana encounter of Round 3, but then Fabiano deviated demonstrating a noteworthy example of playing Berlin endgame for White. It is even more interesting as Adams's mistakes are not that easy to identify.

CARUANA - ADAMS

Michael should have tried 20...Bg5!?, preparing some play against e5-pawn. 20...f6 is also interesting - which, however, looks less logical. А banal 20...a5 after 21.Re1! Rad8 22.Bg3! Bxg3 23.Kxg3 f6 24.f4 Re6 25.Rdd1 fxe5 26.Rxe5 Red6 27.f5

led Adams to some difficulties (although the computer by mistake may assess as equal even this position). As a result the Englishman didn't manage to neutralize White's pawn advantage on the king's side.

Anoher decisive game in Round 6 was played between Naiditsch and Ponomariov. The German grandmaster successfully used Ukrainian's mistake on 28th move.

NAIDITSCH - PONOMARIOV

28...Ndxc5? (Black holds after the correct 28...Nexc5!) 29.Ne5!. White knight threatens to take g4 square, Black faces number of problems. 29...Red8 30.Bxe6 Nxe6 31.Rxc8 Qxc8 32.Rc1! Qa8 33.exd5 Bxd5 34.Ng4 ... (1-0, 49)

Kramnik - Leko and Baramidze - Meier were drawn in equal fights.

Caruana has 5 points out of 6 one round to go. He is 1,5 points ahead of Naiditsch and Leko. The former world champions Kramnik and Ponomariov who haven't yet won a game will face each other in the last round.
