The Russian portal Slon.ru published an interview with Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian who recently visited Armenia together.

The grandmasters were asked: "You are considered the best GM of all time/the second best grandmaster not of only present but in chess history. What do you think about that?"

Carlsen: I am not sure, the "best" of all time is a subjective statement, but what I surely know is that I have the highest rating in history which is awesome.

Aronian: Honeslty I would like to make a remark, according to the rating I am the second player in the world for quite a while already, but I always thought that there are five or a bit more players who play on an equal level. This is a great feeling, this is what I and my parents, also those supporting me have been working for.

Is chess a sport?

Carlsen: I approach chess as a sport. I do preparations for the tournament and play as in sports.

Aronian: Yes, sure it is. It's like the bullfight: if you've been fighting, kept manoeuvring nicely but in the end got struck by the bull, all that you did before becomes senseless. The very same happens in chess, if a nice game finishes in a defeat, there's not a lot of sense in it.
