Edmonton: No Winner Decided in Leaders' Clash

Время публикации: 25.06.2014 21:05 | Последнее обновление: 25.06.2014 21:05

The leaders Wesley So and Vassily Ivanchuk faced each other in Round 4 of the round-robin competition taking place in Edmonton.

Ivanchuk was black and managed to grab a slight advantage, but not more - So escaped adn the game finished peacefully. Thus, Ukrainian and the player from Philippine continue sharing lead now with 3.5/4.

Noteworthy is Ukrainian's 7th move in the Taimanov variation with Paulson set-up in Sicilian defense. Ivanchuk chose a rare continuation which was previously played onlyseveral time - once by one another participant of the tournament Kovalev earlier this year.

SO - IVANCHUK

7...e5!? It's losing a tempo in a way. In comparison to the Sveshnokov system (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5) white has additionally played Be3 and Qd2, while black played only ...a6. On the other hand, such set-up is unusual for exatly Sveshnikov variation as the knight there usually goeson b5 which was now impossible. So, there's a specific play ahead.
