Aronian Spoils the "Most Interesting Game" But Wins Tata Steel Chess

Levon Aronian who assured the overall win in the competition already yesterday, lost in the last round due to a "blunder of the tournament."

ARONIAN - VAN WELY

Aronian, "I saw the right move here: 37.Rd6!" White has a considerable advantage after 37...Re6 38.Rxe6 Qxe6 39.exf4.
37.Qd5 (this isn't a blunder yet) Re6

38.exf4??
Van Wely admitted after the encounter, he was playing for a win the entire game, "Well, I lost two games - against sesley and Boris Gelfand - so I decided to try my luck by playing this aggressive opening. Of course the chances to lose were bigger than to win, but I felt that it was a good practical choice against Levon. Probably he was looking for some easy game in the last round and I had nothing to lose anyway, so I am quite happy of how the game went in the beginning..."

38...Bd4+!! 0-1

Aronian took a philosophical approach to the situation. He smile, discussed his game and others as well.

"It was an interesting game and it wasn't really my intention to get into a time trouble but I did in the end and then I just blundered. Of course it is disappointing but such things happen..."

More on Aronian's plans in his press conference:

The outsiders took advantage of the games in the last rounds: Naiditsch and Gelfand won both last games of the competition.
