Wijk aan Zee: Karjakin wins and gets closer to Aronian

In Round 8 of the A-Group Tata Steel Chess 5 out of 6 games finished decisively. One of the winners is Sergey Karjakin who beat Boris Gelfand and now is closer to the elader Levon Aronian. Karjakin will face Aronian in the next round which is scheduled for the day after tomorrow in Eindhoven.
Таble, schedule, results, all games

"As usually our games with Boris are long, tense and frequently decisive," Sergey gave us an exclusive commentary after the game. "I haven't spent a lot of time to prepare for the Najdorf variation in Sicilian which took place in our game. I spent five hours for preparation of 1.е4 с5 2.Nf3 Nc6 on a free day and only five minutes on Najdorf. Anyways, I'm happy we got a playing position. We discussed it a bit after the game and I think that Boris made a mistake when played 18...b4. The position is mutually sharp, maybe Black even stands objectively fine. After 18...b4 19.Nd5 Nxd5 20.exd5 Bc8 21 f4 I should have an advantage, especially that he had only 15 minutes left up to this moment, which might have not been pleasant. The king is weak, a6 hangs, there's a threat of Qf5... There are a lot of threats and of course it's easier for me to play.

It's important that I found a very strong 38.Qe3! before the first time control. Qa4+ and Qa2+ give nothing after it - I just hide my king and threat to checkmate. Boris was forced to move into the rook endgame, which is perhaps absolutely won for White. At this level, let's say, I was on the top; I didn't see any line in which he could get chances to hold. Maybe I relaxed a bit, but I am happy that in the end I I didn't fail to bring the game to the win."

"Another free day, another five hours of preparation..." said Karjakin leaving for supper.
