The sixth round of Tata Steel Chess has finished in Wijk aan Zee. It was a round of missed opportunities to some extent: Leinier Dominguez failed to convert a considerable advantage against Nakamura, van Wely let Rapport escape, Harikrishna didn't use Caruana's blunder on the 40th move...

Anish Giri can also be upset: he had a real chance in the encounter against Boris Gefand.
"It seems to Boris made a lot of if not weak, just unnecessary moves," Giri said after the game."I got an advantage. When my knight moved to d6, I had a feeling that I am already winning. After we exchanged the rooks, I thought that the endgame could be won by any move because of d4-d5...

GIRI - GELFAND

...I thought that 59.Ba3 was winning: 59...Ke8 60.Bc5 Nd7 61.Kc4 Nf6, here I was planning to go with 62.d5. But it turned out that Black has 62...е5 with a draw.
That's why White should have played 59.d5!! when the bishop occupied the larger file [on the diagram]. It seemed to me that my king is too far from the king's flank... "

After 59.d5 White was winning in all lines. For example, 59...exd5 60.Kb4! Nc4 (60...Nd7 61.Kb5) 61.d7 Ke7 62.Bg7 Kxd7 63.Bxh6 Ke6 64.Bxg5 Nd2 65.Bxf4 Nxf3 и т.д.

62.Kd3 Kd7 63.Bb4 Kc6 64.Kc4 Kd7 65.Kd3
White could try to trap Black: 65.Kc5! And in case of 65...Ne8? White might win 66.d5!! e5 67.Bc3 e4 68.fxe4 Nxd6 69.Kd4 and so on.
Only 65...Nd5! 66.Ba5 Ne3 67.d5 e5 68.Bc3 Nf1 69.Bxe5 Nd2 70.Bg7 Nxf3 71.Bxh6 Ne5 72.Bxg5 f3 leads to equality.

65...Kc6 66.Kc4 1/2
