Levon Aronian: "Nakamura underestimated my position"

In today's round of Tata Steel Chess which is taking place in Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam world's second and third players were facing each other. That's according to the latest rating list. The second in the world rating list, Armenian gradnmaster Levon Aronian, defeated Hikaru Nakamura of America.

Aronian gave our website a short commentary right after finishing the game.

"I prepared the line, the position seemed slightly better for White. However, at the board I couldn't decide what was the best plan. Maybe I have missed something, but the position stayed better for White. I guess HIkaru underestimated it: when he played  22...Rd8 and offered a draw. I think the position is quite unpleasant for Black and it should work to achieve that draw. Another mistake might have been 27...Ke6. Better was 27...Bf8  with chance to escape..."

As Levon noted in the commentary, it seemed to him that the knight vs. bishop endgame was winning for White; perhaps, that influenced Levon's decision on the 34th move:

ARONIAN - NAKAMURA

Levon didn't take on b7. Menawhile, it was winning: 34.Nxb7 Nf4+ 35.Kc4 Nxh3 36.b4 Ng1 37.a4 Nxf3 38.a5! и т.д.
The following took place in the game: 34.Nxe6? Kxe6 35.Kc4 b6 36.a4 Bd2 37.b3 h5 38.b4 a5 39.bxa5 bxa5 40.Kb5

40...Kd7? Both GM's missed 40...Kf7! It turns out Black can hold because it has its own passed pawn on h file. For instance, 40...Kf7 41.Nd6+ Kg6 42.Nc4 Be1 43.Nxa5?! Kg5 44.Nc6 Kh4 45.Nb4 Kxh3 46.a5 h4 47.a6 Bf2 and so on. If White decides to close the way for the rival's king, then: 42.h4, and after 42.Be1 the knight is forced to return 43.Nf5 and that's already a draw..

41.Ng7 h4 42.Nf5 Be1 43.Ne3 Ke6 44.Nc4 Kd5 1-0

Aronian's commentary is available in the audio player in Russian. Now Armenian GM leads with 3 points.
