First big success of Russian team in "modern history"

The match against Egypt wasn't that easy for Russian team as expected. Only Ian Nepomniachtchi won confidently, Vitiugov and Karjakin drew and sensational could turn the game on Board 1 - Mohamed Ezat sacrificed the queen in the encounter against Vladimir Kramnik.

It even seemed that Black could built a fortress, but creative play from both sides eventually led to black having a winning position.

KRAMNIK - EZAT

Here Ezat missed 31...Bg5! with further plan of building a construction 32.Qc3 Rd3 33.Qc7 Bd5.
And Kramnik managed to avoid forced loss: 31...Rd3 32.Qe2 Bb3 33.Ra8 Bxd1 34.Qxd3 Rxa8 35.Qxd2 and so on.

The game lasted for long, however it culdn't change the standings: both rivals weretrying to win but the position stayed too 'drawish'. In order to surpass Russia, Ukraine and China had to win their today's matches 4-0, but none of them managed to do so.

Check out the standings which is updated online. First tie break is individual number of points (Pts 2).

Russian team gained a first big win in "modern history" if we dub so the period when Ilya Levitov became the Chairman of the Management Board of the Russian Chess Federation. Earlier Russian team won WTCCin January 2010.
