The rating favourite of the World Cup GM Levon Aronian got eliminated by GM Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia. He didn't manage to recoup himself in the return game of Round 3.

Russian GM got a promising position after the opening, however, he spent too much time and at some point it seemed that could bring him some problems.

TOMASHEVSKY - ARONIAN

19.Nxh7!? Is a bold and quite proper move. Another possibility was 19.Nh3 but as Evgeny has explained after the game: "There were several reasons of playing so. Firstly I wanted to play chess because I don't play against such great opponents so often. Secondly, the position itself forced me to make difficult decisions, because Levon played provocative opening. I wanted to prepare for it but I forgot about it. I think White should play principle d6 and probably after that White has a clear advantage [...] I have to sacrifice if I want to play principle chess."
19...Kxh7 20.f4 Bb7 21.f5 Qe8 22.e5?! Better was to start with 22.Rce1.
22...Bxg2 23.Kxg2 fxe5 24.Rce1 gxf5? After long thinking Levon decided not to bring the extra piece into the game: 24...Nb4.
25.Rxf5 Rxf5 26.Qxf5+ Qg6 27.Qxd7+ Kg8 28.Rf1? White didn't risk to lose if it took on е5. for instance 28...Nb4 could be followed by 29.h4! and Black's counterplay collapses under the threats to its king.

28...c4? Armenian GM again misses the chance 28...Nb4! Accuracy was needed later as well. As Evgeny has noted quite fairly after the sacrifice on h7 White has a simple plan. "My feeling was that my initiative was enough for a draw, but now I am not sure," Evgeny said analysing the position in the press center. "Maybe I was losing at some point but on practice it was really unclear and basically I think it was a play on three results..."
29.h4 and the draw is practically forced.
29...c3 30.h5 Qe4+ 31.Kh3 Kh8 32.Qe6 Nc5 33.Qf6+ Kh7 34.Qf7+ Kh8 35.Qf6+ Kh7 36.Qf7+ Kh8 37.Qf6+ 1/2
