Eventually Vladimir Kramnik managed to move on to Round 3 of the World Cup. He won the 2nd rapid game against Mikhail Kobalia and admitted the Round was tough. "It's clear that the next round will not be easy," he added. The former world champion didn't know his opponent in Round 3, he was informed that he will face Areschenko of Ukraine.

Kobalia offered a quick draw in the 1st rapid game which remembered Kramnik Kazan-2011. "Since then it's called the "Grischuk strategy"," Kramnik smiled. "You get shorter and shorter time control and maybe you get your chance. That is why I believe that the knock-out system is not the best format for chess... Okey, since I have to play here - I do; some players are playing pragmatically - I cannot really blame them, as well as my opponent, I understand he is trying to use his chances..."

What makes Kramnik to play in this competition is the FIDE rule according to which those qualified by the ELO are obliged to take part at least in one official qualification tournament - either in Grand Prix or in the World Cup.

In the return game Kramnik started with 1.е4 and continued with 2.b3 on 1...с5 gaining a nice win.
