The organizers note the record number of participants (overall 169 players) at the European Individual Women's Chess Championship which started in Belgrade yesterday. This was discussed at the press conference attended by the ECU President Silvio Danailov and the Minister of Sports of Serbia Alisa Maric.

So, what motivated players from 35 countries to participate in EIWCC the prize fund of which - 60 thousand EUR - is far from the record breaking sum offered by Turkey last year? This question was kindly answered by Silvio Danailov and ECU Executive Director Vladimir Sakotic specially for our website.

Firstly, those who decide to live in the official hotel Metropol Palace proposed by the organizers of the event are not overpaying, on the contrary, lodging costs even cheaper for them than for a regular tourist who books a room in the Internet. That's why 125 out of 169 participants chose the official hotel to stay at.

Secondly, those players who decide to live somewhere else are not forced to pay any fines.

"We could rip the participants off exorbitant prices and then shout about our rich prize fund," Danailov explained. "But it's not only about money, but about respect towards the players. I think we did everything in regard to this and ladies should be satisfied."

Alisa Maric connected the championship to the revival of the chess tradition in Serbia - the country which was historically reputed as one of the most chess-friendly countries in the world.
