Azerbaijani GM practically never plays Petrov defense as black in top events. However, he makes exceptions for Karjakin time after time: so was at the European team championship 2011 which was won by the Azerbaijani team, he played it again today. According to Shakhriyar the new plan with 11.h3 and 12.g4 isn't very successful. "After 12...h5 Black has no problem," Shakhriyar said confidently at the press conference, later continually shaking his head expressing dissatisfaction with his own actions. Mamedyarov also noted he played quite bad during the game four-five times and Sergey had a chance to draw.

КARJAKIN - MAMEDYAROV

Here Shakhriyar has made not the best move 63...d4 giving Karjakin a chance to hold by keeping the bishop on the diagonal: he could place it on а8, b7, c6 or even h1. After 64.Bg4? f3 66.c5 f2 67. Ke2 bxc5 68. bxc5 Kf4 Black won an important tempo leaving Sergey the only choice: to defend a losing endgame with queens. Mamedyarov wasn't precise in this winning position and after all light pieces were traded the position was even drawn. It's not really easy to sign the draw in practical position though. The mistake on Move 91 was decisive for White.
